This novel imagines the Detective Sargent investigating the disappearance of a young girl that has similarities to one of the worst investigations that involved him in another jurisdiction several years ago. The resolution seriously impacted his health as he was retiring from the police force and I am relieved that there is a continuation of the series as there is quite a cliff hanger ending.

Holy Toledo! Talk about leaving a girl hangin'. There are changes afoot at Kings Lake Central. I'm eager to continue following these characters and their investigations in whatever capacity.

Last of the audible free in the DC series. Again very, very well done. I'm deducting a solid half point for the cliffhanger ending. not sure the author's motivations other than to sell the next book, but for the reader it's deeply unsatisfying. The next book in the series requires a credit so I will not get that for a while however the one after that was on sale and I picked it up. Clearly the existence of additional books means DC survives.

A lot of pondering of retirement - getting weary of this.

Also the required trope of the sociopathic serial killer that haunts the detective and keeps coming after the main character.  Does every mystery series have to do this?

Unsatisfactory ending.
The author leaves you assuming that the main character is dead or at least brain dead.  Fortunately, it was obvious he is NOT dead as there is a book #9. <\spoiler>
