This book reinvents the horror genre!

I don't know how, but I am able to use the words fun, scandalous, disturbing, morbid, and scary all to describe the same book. There were delicious house wives moments as well as totally, insanely grotesque, skin crawling scenes.

The book also not only screams the injustices of Black POC, it also shouts from the rooftops the reality of the misogyny that women must face.

It's compulsive and readable and spine tingling. And it sometimes made me uncomfortable. But, I was so into this book. The writing is remarkable. The gory scenes are some of the best I've ever read (Que the roach scene in the attic). The plot is meaty and the characters are people worth investing in.

I can't wait to read more from this author!

Trigger warnings: suicide, suicide attempt, harm to children, rape, domestic abuse.

I reallllly didn’t like this book.
The racism, misogyny and sexism - no thank you.
The unlikeable characters (besides mrs Greene and the mother in law).
The way the book progressed and their “solution” to the problem….
The fact that Patricia didn’t even protect her own children.
The book was gross and it made me feel gross.
I honestly didn’t take away anything positive from this reading experience.

Very slow and I saw that there was some SA, which I avoid.

This was the first Grady Hendrix book I read, and I will NEVER regret reading it!!! It was deliciously funny and tense and scary. The characters were so well written (so well I thought Hendrix was a woman at first since he wrote the women so well). A wonderful take on vampires!

Not my favorite Grady Hendrix book... It felt more like a drawn out drama with a tiny bit of humor sprinkled in, but not what I like about his other stories.

I will continue to read his books, as this one is the only one that didn't earn at least 4 stars, in my opinion. This one just seemed to miss the mark for me.

Literally so gross. At the beginning, i was a little bored and cringed out, the middle was ok, then the ending was so discusting and i could not read it anymore.
I dont understand why he had to make james harris suck peoples blood through their inner thigh in a very sectual way abd describe it as being euphoric for the victim, especially because he always goes after kids, like thats so fucking discusting and does not need to be in a book.
without the gross parts and the ending, i could have given it a better rating but i can not give a book with such a horendus premus a rating better than the lowest.
