He who saves one life saves the world entire. He had been unable to save the life most precious to him, but he had saved a stranger. If this was possible, well then anything was possible. Even forgiveness. Even joy.
There is something about Jeet Thayil's latest, Low that pulls you in and sucks you deeper into an abyss. Narrating the story of a recent widower trying to overcome his loss, Thayil's penmanship is in exquisite display here: his nuanced portrayal of sorrow, angst and melancholy thoroughly engross the reader, providing you with the very same emotion one feels while in Bombay. A feeling of melancholy, angst and sorrow, while feeling an extraordinary high to be just alive.
