John Waters' writings make me want to branch out into more and more dirty filthy readings and not be ashamed. If I had to pick a cult to follow, Waters is hands-down my leader.

a bit of a slow ending that i didn't quite feel tied the theme together, but this is by far the best read of this mara-john thus far. i could listen to the leslie van houten chapter for hours.

The overwhelming majority of this book is awesome, but I wasn't into the last two chapters/essays. Hearing John Waters read the book is really lovely, and I don't know if I'd have enjoyed a "regular" book as much.

A superb start, but unfortunately it petered out. I love the concept - telling one's own story through the lives of one's role models. The relationships he has with the individuals in the early chapters is so personally revealing about Waters that I don't think a reader could have known him quite so well if he were directly narrating his own story. The latter individuals, however, lacked that personal touch and became less reflective of Waters himself. The "Roommates" chapter was downright tedious - art world humble bragging that read like an auction catalog, with no personal connection whatsoever. I wish Waters had stayed true to form and given us more of his "role models."
