This starts out a bit slow but once the ball is rolling it’s ROLLING. Plenty of action and surprises to keep things interesting. The romance was nice and not as rushed as it is in the mortal instruments. Up until the epilogue though it felt like this book could be a stand alone so I’m curious how the story will proceed without feeling forced.

This story follows on from The Mortal Instruments. Our protagonists are Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn who we originally met during the Dark War/City of Heavenly Fire.

Emma has been obsessed with finding out who murdered her parents as she did not agree with the Claves ruling that it was Sebastian.

The story starts when Emma stumbles upon a body with strange language etched into its body and symbols around it. Along with the rest of the Blackthorns, Emma and Julian investigate the suspicious murders happening in LA. A family member is returned and new friends are made along the way.

Cassie tells a story where friendships and relationships are questioned and tested. Where things are not what the appear.

(Potential Spoilers)
As the saying goes - keep your friends close but your enemies closer.

Emma and Julian are a powerful duo. I love Emma’s friendship with Christina and Mark. The twins are a favourite - Ty is such a sweet character. Cassie is fantastic at writing their different personalities and they shine through the pages. I like reading parts from Kit’s perspective.
