Normally I don’t read the next book in a series right away but the prologue for this book was so good (she included it in book 1) that I HAD to know what happened! I swear I felt like I stepped into an episode of Grey’s Anatomy (back when it was REALLY good!) While Dr. Harley is a standalone book, I highly recommend reading Book 1 first! The two overlap when she is in the “present” and while you get brief character introductions, you won’t feel nearly as connected with this wonderful bunch of characters if you don’t read the first book.

Harley has wanted to be a surgeon ever since she was a little girl. In fact, she hasn’t wanted or cared about anything more. When other kids were partying or enjoying their capricious youth, Harley was studying and focusing on doing what it took to securing her future. Finally, she made it to one of two major milestones – she was about to start medical school. Still dealing with the recent unexpected death of her father, Harley just wanted a night out to blow off some steam before she was swamped again with responsibilities and expectations. Drinks, dancing, and close friends, a girl couldn’t ask for anything more. Unfortunately, the men that kept hitting on her didn’t seem to understand that – especially the knockout that approached her at the bar. As gorgeous as he was, she didn’t have time for distractions. Apparently said distraction still hadn’t gotten the message as he finds her on the dance floor. Under the manipulative move that he will return her card after one dance, things escalate quickly and two strangers find themselves out of their mind with lust on the rooftop of the bar. Coming to her senses, Harley makes a quick escape, putting the uncharacteristically reckless act in the back of her mind, until she walks into class and finds herself staring at the gorgeous specimen from the night before, who happens to be her professor!

What I like about it: Using their dubbed nickname, I truly enjoy it when the “Brady Bunch” gets together! The Knight Men and Lawrence Women are a riot but they protect their own. Between the numerous stunts pulled by Reagan, the insane things that come out of Trevor’s mouth, add to it their “aunt” Crazy Cass, you can’t help but laugh. What I find that I love about AK’s books is that she brings you into the family – you feel like you know these people. You are happy for them, you are disappointed in them, you are protective of them. You want to continue to see how their lives work out and hope it is for the best because they have lost so much.

What I love about it: I absolutely love the story that revolved around Harley and everything she had to put up with. She had to work twice as hard and fight off unwanted advances simply because she was attractive. Her fellow peers and one particular staff member didn’t see her for the brilliant person she was. In their eyes, she was just a “hot piece using her looks to advance her career”. I can’t even begin to imagine how devastating that had to be to her mental health. She was so afraid of “resembling” the assumption that she refused to do anything that made her happy – including being with the only man that she ever had deep feelings for. I understand her stance as a student but even as a resident, she was always worried about image, and rightfully so. What was wrong is that if she looked any other way, as a resident – it may not have mattered as much. Her looks would always work against her and she knew that. I loved Dr. Powers take for that reason because she’s right, it was messed up!

What I didn’t like about it: I would say the one thing that rubbed me wrong in this story was that Brody was a little more aggressive than I would have liked. Some may characterize it as intense but the initial dancing moment with Harley and the porch declaration at her friend Megan’s house were a little off-putting. Yes, he was a big teddy bear and proved time and time again that if Harley ever pushed back, he would do whatever she asked so I know most of it was to push past her hard shell but it still put me on edge at times. I blame on too many Lifetime movies.

On the subject of intense, I have to confess that
at 78%, when Harley’s entire world was about to come crashing down,
I had to take a break to mentally prepare myself. AK had already proven she can tug at my heart strings so I wanted to be in the right mindset of what was about to go down, arming myself with the knowledge that there would be an HEA, somehow. What proceeded was lackluster and anti-climatic so I figured alls well that ends well. Nope! AK was not done yet and next thing I know, I am in tears with what happens later. She got me anyway! She let me get my defenses down and then snuck in an unexpected storyline that just floored me.

If you read my other review, you already know AK can write a hot scene – I am just going to come right out and say it! I have read a lot of hot and heavy books but each time I read one of hers, I feel like I need to stick my head in a bucket of ice. She has three more books in this series (five total) so I can’t even imagine how she is going to top what Harley and Brody did in this one but I plan to find out!

Lastly, I love how AK keeps incorporating Scott in the story with his letters. Through each one, you can see how much love and dedication he had to and for Darian and the girls. It makes his lost that much more palpable.

I will admit I have surrendered to this series. While I will try my hardest to pace out the next couple of books, I can already feel the draw to book 3. AK has set the bar high with the first two books, I can’t wait to see if she can keep delivering such an engaging and engrossing story.

A.K. Has done it again. I don’t think I could not love a book in her City of Sisterly Love series. Harley is such a strong and smart woman who just wants to get her career on her own smarts and skill and not just because she’s so dang pretty. I love the even when it broke his heart Brody still respected her wishes. This book made me smile, laugh, cry and just always keep wishing for the best for this crew! Can’t wait to read Cass and Trevor’s story!

4.5 Stars!

Dr. Harley is the daughter of Darian (main character in Book 1 Knight) and this book follows her story as she becomes a surgeon. I loved this book, Harley was relatable, and it showed her dealing with sexist bullshit just because she was an attractive women. But let’s talk about Brody frickin Cooper ladies and gentleman, this man was perfection. He was always respecting Harley’s wishes even when he didn’t agree with them, he fought for her even when she thought there was no hope, and damn could this man dirty talk.

There is a little bit of a plot point at the end that I wasn’t the biggest fan of but that was more of a personal preference.

Tropes:
-Professor/student
-Forbidden romance
-Medical romance

Can’t wait for the next book in the series!

I am loving this whole family!!
Harley is a very studious girl. Keen on excelling and training to be the best doctor she can be, she’s not going to let anything get in her way, even her happiness.
A one night stand in a night club on the roof has her on edge and 2 days later she meets him again and she’s in shock.
Dr Brody Cooper aka her one night stand is her professor. Could it be any worse! She can’t be known as the girls who got her grades sleeping with her professor. There’s no way!
They have an agreement that nothing will happen, but how long can they fight their feelings? How can they resist each other and work together?
Loved these two characters, her sisters and step brothers are quite hilarious. “Boundaries Reagan. You need to learn boundaries”. Brilliant. Looking forward to book 3!
