This book is a must read! It’s haunting and the drawings are stunning.
This classic text I remember reading in high school. It was a book that addressed many of the challenges and pressures students face in high school about fitting in, family challenges, friend groups, rape and finding yourself. It was one of the first books I remember reading that really addressed some of these hard issues and realities teens face.
I recently found it was a graphic novel and wanted to read the reinterpretation. I love how in many ways the story was slightly modernized, adding in social media platforms like Instagram and modern language. The roots of the story stayed the exact same with art being Melinda’s outlet to express herself.
This book has been challenged in the past due to content, but the power of Laurie Halas Andresons words and story needs to continue to be shared.
I love how a graphic novel will make this text and story more accessible to readers!

Speak is one of my favorite books of all time. When I found out there would be a graphic novel adaptation, I was excited but also nervous. Would the artwork capture all the things I envisioned in Melinda?
I was totally blown away by the results, and so glad that Laurie Halse Anderson entrusted Emily Carroll with this project. It's beautiful & breathtaking - a must-read.

Graphic Novel/Realistic Fiction: Wow! It has been a long time since I read the original novel, Speak, but this new graphic novel version was intense and powerful. The combination of art and words make Melinda's story so real. The art theme in the story itself (Melinda's trees) makes this a perfect book for a graphic novel. I also love how the new version brought the book up do date to include the Internet and more current references. My only suggestion is if you have NOT read the original novel, skip the author's note at the beginning of the book and go back and read it when you are finished. It has a pretty big spoiler in it.

a tough read through a lot of it because of the themes, so be sure to check trigger warnings, but an impactful storytelling and illustrative approach.
4.5 stars
At first I didn't think I would feel as connected to this in graphic novel format but by the end I was just as moved.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: Rape and self harm

I’m just not sure you can capture subject matter this deep and important THOUGHTFULLY in this format. I feel like this would be a great read-after but the story just really needs more words to be told properly. The illustration was beautiful though!
