Definitely a read the content warnings book. I wish we had more time to sit with her because it felt like she just decided to get better. The passage of time was rather quick.

5 stars ⭐️ A really incredible adaptation of the book dealing with such a serious topic but expressing it so well and being able to capture Melinda’s feelings throughout the book. As a trigger warning the story is about rape and isn’t very graphic but does show the situation in which she was raped but I think it handled it very well and very maturely. The original novel was written by a survivor of rape so it’s written by someone who understands what the protagonist is going through. I think everyone should read this graphic novel it is incredibly moving but also educates about the feelings of someone who goes through this.

I read the original Speak in high school, but I remember not liking it much. Then again, I was in high school. Either way, I think this graphic novel adaptation is a wonderful new take on the story - the entire story is about Melinda not being able to verbally express what happened to her, and Emily Carroll does a wonderful job portraying Melinda's state of mind visually.

Adding artwork to this story was an incredible decision. I fell in love (and hate) with Melinda's story many, many years ago and have used it to teach students for years. Adding the graphics to it just made it all the more poignant and real.
