Love the visual interpretation of the novel (illustrated by Emily Carroll) to touch on this darker topic. Lots of poignant moments and I really enjoyed how believable Melinda's inner dialogue felt about everyone she meets at school and her family. The way Emily Carroll uses the comic medium to convey complex moments is amazing.

Powerful, difficult, heavy story accompanied by superb artwork, Emily Carroll is one of my favorite artists

This book was very interesting and sends out a really good problem we have in this world. It's easy and fast read, and the art is absolutely unique! It really matched the story well. I really enjoyed it, because being a teen is hard, and when an incident happens, we don't often know if we should speak up or not.

Always speak up though! Even if you think your friends will hate you, or you'll disappoint your parents. Imagine if you didn't tell anyone and it your friends or family find out another way...those don't tend to end up well.

Anyway! Always Speak up and tell someone what you are going through. I highly recommend this book and if you are struggling with anything read this!

I read the prose version a long time ago, so this felt almost like reading it for the first time. I love the illustrator's style, and the writing is obviously very good. I think the pictures could have spoken a bit more for themselves, but it still captured the crushing weight of depression and isolation that can come after sexual assault. Still holds up.

I only wish I had read this about fifteen years ago. Little me needed this.

4.5/5

I haven't read the original source material, so can't tell you how faithful this is to it, but as a standalone it's beautifully effective. Emily Carroll (creator of the deliciously eerie 2014 anthology, Through the Woods) is perfect for this adaptation, using her penchant for horror and dark images to depict the sheer terror of adolescent girlhood.

This is an adaptation done incredibly well. Carroll's artwork enhances the story and drives home the emotions which I felt while reading the original novel. Wonderful.
