Wow. This was stunning, in regards to both the story and the artwork. This is the first time I've read "Speak" in any form, but am definitely going to be picking up the novel to read it again. Mel's story is written so well in Anderson's writing and captured perfectly in Carroll's haunting style. The sense of being a rabbit with shortened breath was just felt so deeply within "Speak" that it was impossible to not feel what Mel was feeling and be get completely caught up in her life. A few years back my friend lent me her copy of Speak and I read it and loved it and believed it should be taught in schools.
A few months back a saw a copy Speak the graphic novel it was beautiful I knew I had to get it. I'm so glad I did. I loved this. The art in this book spoke volumes and just added a whole new layer of even more feelings to the story. I want to applaud Emily Carroll for this.
I have never been raped or close to that situation. But I have been harassed. And during the #metoo movement I decided to ask every woman I talked to if they'd ever been touched my someone without their consent; have they ever been harassed. All of them said yes. Not one said no. For some it was a stranger; a relative; a friend. But the fact it like IT in this book it does not matter who they are all that matters is that their a monster but seemingly fit into society and can put a mask of a good person; which makes it harder for people to believe you. So I just want to say to people you need to teach your children about consent and you need to believe anyone who comes forward to you. It's hard to always have proof; it's hard to talk about; so when someone takes a big brave step to talk about it and trusts you with it you listen and you believe them!
This book needs to be taught in schools all around the world.

I just saw the movie Speak it came out in 2004 and Kristen Stewart did a beautiful job in it. Her acting moved me. It's surprisingly very accurate to the source material and absolutely great. If you haven't already watched it you definitely should now.

Reading the novel and graphic novel had a profound impact on me. Carroll's stunning black and white illustrations bring Melinda's story and journey to life. The graphic novel was well-done; it stayed true to the original text while also breathing new life into a story that had been published nearly 20 years before. 10/10 the graphic novel is an excellent companion piece to Speak the novel.

Krachtig verhaal met een sterke stijl en visualisatie.
Ik moet wel even zeggen dat de hulpbronnen lijst op het einde wat uitgebreider mocht. Nu gaat het enkel over hulp bij seksueel geweld in Nederland. Terwijl Vlaamse mensen het boek natuurlijk ook kunnen lezen en het boek ook wel meer triggers heeft dan enkel seksueel geweld.

I have not read the source novel this is based on, but this "adaptation" was brilliantly effective. As someone who chronically and nervously bites their lips, every line around the main character's mouth was felt by me. There is a theme that is presented -- very explicitly -- near the beginning, and it winds up becoming beautifully visualized and potently enriching by the end, but I couldn't help think it could have been more present in other ways more thoughtout the middle of the book. (Or maybe it was and I just wasn't as focused on it when it wasn't literally being commented on in the text or visually.)
But yes, I loved the book -- as messy and complicated as it is to say that about a book revolving around the topic of sexual assault. My only other slight criticism is there's moments where it feels like the book was made to be printed in color, and there's some real contrast issues between some of the text and the art.
