The beginning is a big introduction to the characters that will be present throughout the story (the first 33 pages) and everyone has a stake in going to Egypt once they find out that Linnet Ridgeway, the main protagonist who is an extremely wealthy woman, got married and is on her honeymoon in Egypt. All the characters are scrambling to get to Egypt — to what? Murder her or her husband for their money? That's the first impression I got, and I didn't like this "wonderful, generous Linnet." Everyone loves her, for her beauty, her cleverness, her possessions and her money. She has every luxury in life, and it made her into a tyrant and a brat who threw money at everything she wanted without thought. She even stole her best friends' fiancé and married him! She's a terrible, selfish person but everyone loves her. Urg!
As Detective Hercule Poirot says to Linnet, "You have heard portions of the Bible read aloud in church. You have heard of King David and of the rich man who had one ewe lamb—and of how the rich man took the poor man's one ewe lamb. That was something that happened, Madame."
Wonderfully put!
At first I wasn't sure I would end up reading the whole thing but it got really interesting and I became invested in finding out where this story was going and what was going to happen. Of course, this is a murder mystery so I was expecting a murder at some point but I was shocked and taken completely by surprise when it happened! Genius writing there!! I hated Linnet in the beginning and by the end of the book I only felt sorry for her. Really good story! What a rollercoaster!
