I wanted to like this book more than I ultimately did. It took me an extremely long time to get through it, but I did learn some interesting facets and enjoyed the song list before chapters especially

there was some good and some bad. i love reading about music as of late. i think vivien goldman could be a little more thoughtful at specific points but i wont get into that

I’m not familiar with the author, but she inserts herself too much and seems too white/third wave feminist for someone writing in the late 2010s. The themes aren’t especially enlightening and interrupt what little narrative exists. Are these cobbled-together music columns? Would she rather have been writing her memoir? Infuriating writing style (undergrad thesis, full of commas and clumsy description). I’ve read many better books on women in punk; this was such a disappointment.

The writer was unnecessarily pedantic in her writing. There was no clear storyline or narrative. And the author strikes me very much as a white, girl boss feminist, I thought we were past that as a culture. I guess not.

Felt a bit flat, which is a shame considering the subject. Think it just rocketed through too many bands, and I put it away for ages before forcing myself to finish. The playlists are good though, always fun to be introduced to some new music and reminded of old favourites.
