God. Just, like, this book is so perfect. It is so lovely and so dark and so hopeful. The central protagonist, Yamilet, practically leaps off the pages, and while I personally found myself most entranced and represented by her brother Cesar, the carefully constructed cast of characters is all-around absolutely excellent. Highly recommend.

Es un libro entretenido para sanar a tu niño queer y minoritario interior. Además de una especie de ventana para entender lo que elles viven en Estados Unidos y reflexionar sobre problemáticas que no siempre nos tocan cerca.
Vale la pena.

So cute and sweet and fun, without being overly saccharine. YA at its best - yes the characters are teens with "teen" problems, but their problems are relatable and there's definitely something in this book for adults too. Almost a perfect 5⭐ read for me, but some of the conflicts were resolved in a heavy-handed and kind of corny way, which I can forgive because I do think that kind of resolution can be appropriate for teen readers.

A lot happened in this story but it didn't feel rushed or laid on too thick, more like enough to keep me engaged and motivated to keep reading. I'd definitely recommend for anyone who enjoys LGBTQ+ fiction, or who likes YA selectively because they sometimes get annoyed by immature characters.

i might be learning that in my old age (a whole 20) i cant enjoy contemporary YA like i used to. there were a LOT of pretty bad cringy moments but third act was pretty good. im glad Reyes didnt do the "main couple breaks up and gets back together thing" in the third act, but rather it touched on a more darker subject with the whole family instead. i enjoyed the book, but i think imma start passing on ya with younger-than-18 charas lol

The title of this book is kind of lacking. What about it was a guide? Nothing.

Deeply dark first 85% of the book, do not read if you are a queer in crisis. This was too heavy for me in this moment, but I recognize it is pretty good writing.
