it was nice! i loved the narrator of the audiobook, i think that if i read the physical book, i wouldn’t enjoy it as much. the dialogue’s were fun and you could really understand the emotions of the characters, not only from the literal words but also from the way the narrator narrated..kinda, yea.
i feel like the ending was a bit rushed and unfortunately unrealistic in a way, but i’ve been in need of a soapy coming of age lesbian ya book so,,
the story also depicted hard topics but it wasn’t too much to make the whole story depressing. it was cheesy and gushy at times and i think that’s exactly what i needed rn.
plus the occasional spanish was basically like a really passive way of me preparing for my exams :,D

I am not the target audience for this book. I’m only 30 pages in but the writing style was bothering me

It was so amazing. I loved both Yami and her brother's coming-out stories. I truly felt the struggles of them both. The romance was also beautifully written.

i started reading this thinking it was going to be an amazing book. i mean, 4.3 stars? that must be a GOOD book. but what was i met with?
disappointment. lots of plot holes and inconsistent characters. a lot of scenes don’t make any sense to me and everything feels very rushed, which makes it very hard to empathize with what’s happening. most of the characters lack depth and the story lacks structure.
as a mexican myself, i can say that the way she talks about our “indigenous ancestors” (while never actually mentioning which indigenous group she is referring to, which is the mayas by the way) is completely unrealistic and it feels like how a white person would talk about how they’re 13% mexican because their great-great-great-great-grandma was.
i’m pretty sure this book is supposed to be a romance, but there’s barely any of it. we only see a couple of interactions between yami (main character) and bo (love interest) and suddenly yami is head over heels for her out of nowhere. there are very few scenes of them together and they’re all mostly in the second half of the book, and you’d think, well, it’s a slow burn. no. it’s more like a starts-in-the-middle-of-the-book-very-fast-burn.
everything just feels very hollow, and while it was (sort of) a fun read, i don’t think it’s a book i’d recommend.
