Oh man. What a wild ride.

What I liked:
  • The character development, which was only possible because the bar was so low that there was no way but up (this is only slightly sarcastic)
  • The story was very captivating. I was almost unable to put it down and probably would've finished it in one go if I wasn't so frickin tired.
  • Kinda unrelated to the general plot of the book, but the parts that were in Russian... I understood some. In a way, it was a confidence boost. Go me. (For reference: I don't actually understand Russian I've just heard enough to understand some in a context)
  • Also, I kind of did like the obsession of Christian, because it showed dedication, however, i doubt it stopped him from sleeping around. Men (eye roll)
What I didn't like:
  • That weird ass therapist. Like, what in the heteronormativity did even happen there? (I'll get to that part later again) this woman (who had a PhD for some inexplicable reason) felt so god-damned unprofessional (it gave me a little Harley Quinn and joker vibes but without him being interested in her at all). She def thought she was the main character in her own story. Anywho.
  • Heteronormativity: why does it exist? Every women who appears (or doesn't) in this book, is attracted to Christian and wants to get in his pants. Why? As an asexual, I can't relate. And what about lesbians? They exist? And people have different tastes, not everyone's gonna like him. Especially when he's such a douche to everyone.

The Tropes: kinda enemies to lovers
Triggerwarning / content warnings: infidelity, abuse (physical and emotional), manipulation / gaslighting, violence, assault, harassment, rape, stalking, drug use / drug abuse
Mood song: k. Flay »High enough« (slowed down)

The Maddest Obsession was a hell of a ride I'll tell you that much. First things first, the book plays off in two parts: the first part spans the seven years since Gianna met Christian, and the second part goes down during the present (around the time of The Sweetest Oblivion). Furthermore, Gianna's perspective plays out during a variety of periods but Christian's either happen during the present or throughout the period at the end of the book. Personally I did not find this too confusing (even though I'm explaining it terribly) but I can see why there is the potential for it. Be sure to read the author's note before reading the book.

On to the actual book I loved the complexity of it (and I don't just mean the timeline). Gianna and Christian are both very complex characters who had to work and wait for their happily ever after. Their past trauma prevented both of them from truly opening themselves up to love and seeing them both take the risks to be happy and being there for one another was beautiful. Also, this was the one time I didn't mind a *certain trope* from appearing (if you know, you know).

Ultimately the book was just well written and an entertaining read. I can't say too much without spoiling it, but I can say that I really enjoyed all 3 the books in this series and I think you will too.

1 star because the author is racist. I would've rated it 4.5 if it weren't for her racism.
