One of my top reads of the year! Gyasi is an excellent writer, and a master of structuring a novel. I loved the exploration of two halves of a family that experienced slavery very differently -
half as enslaved people and half as slave traders
-
until the two families are eventually reunited again in modern-day America.
This book is reminiscent of “Roots” by Alex Haley and “Zeal” by Morgan Jerkins, two of my other five star reads.

A little hard to keep track of the characters and stories because I read this a little bit at a time. Well written and thought provoking.

This won so many awards and follows the lives of 2 half-sisters who were born in 18th century Ghana. One was sold into slavery and one was married to a British slaver. It sounds like a heavy topic, but it's beautifully written and engaging and a total page-turner. It comes across as a very honest narrative and I've been learning a lot about the culture of the tribes, the political climate of that time, and the slave trade. Some of the traditions and cultures of the tribes remind me of various traditions and beliefs of Chinese tribes too, both in old China and modern day.
