Still one of my favorite books ever! Read it for the second time yesterday because I loaned it to a friend and just got it back. I wanted to remind myself of its incredible depth and breadth.

I took my time with this and I'm glad I did. By the end I felt truly emotional about how deeply I knew the genealogy and legacy of this family lineage. An incredible way of depicting the unfolding history of many people across Africa and the African diaspora.

a lyrical narrative of Africans and African-Americans, a family tree sprawling from the slave trade to today, an absolute tour de force. definitely one of the best books of the year for me
