Too much telling, not enough showing. Prose was flat, overly simple, and repetitive. While I see why others liked it, and some sections were enjoyable and captivating, I think the mediocre writing quality prevented this book from fulfilling the goals of its author
I absolutely loved this book. The story telling is amazing and the history involved in it helps paint a beautiful picture. Absolutely recommend reading.
Bravo!!! I stepped outside MY box with this book and I’m so glad I did. This was a wonderfully written book! I couldn’t put it down. Definitely a page turner.

I’ve never read a book quite like this - what a clever way to tell a story with the core theme of intergenerational trauma and family dynamics over time. The shadow of slavery lingers over all these characters lives, and whilst we only spend a brief moment with all of them I thought Gyasi did a good job of making them all distinct and unique. It took a while to appreciate the narrative being told, but I would highly recommend this.
