This was…fine. Honestly it didn’t blow me away and it wasn’t completely obnoxious but I didn’t really care for it. I think I struggled the most with the writing. I mean it was a little annoying because she’s always like my stomach is like a volcano and it’s bubbling into my throat and I’m just like girl. I do not need those constant descriptions.
I also felt like the story was kind of bland overall. I liked the sisters and I feel like we would have needed more interaction with them to get a full story. The ending was also super rushed and it felt super cheesy at points especially with Marnie’s big speech.
Overall I just don’t really care and I feel like I needed more Adhira and Whit and not so many inner monologues.

Thank you to Edelweiss for providing me with an advanced audiobook copy of this title!
'Being Mary Bennet' is a charming 'Pride and Prejudice' retelling set in the modern day that follows Marnie Barnes and her many attempts to become the main characters in her own life, thus removing her 'mary-bennet-ness'. Marnie must tackle with her overbearing mother, seemingly perfect sisters and long term love of her life who may not be as perfect as she always thought.
My feeling towards this book changed abruptly throughout my time reading. In the first few chapters I hated the main character and the goal she was trying to achieve, I thought the writing was incredibly cheesy and I really didn't think I'd enjoy this book. But please don't let this put you off- I grew to absolutely love this book.
Marnie developed amazingly as a character, and as this slowly took place over the course of the book so many new aspects were introduced. I realised Marnie was actually very relatable for me, and loved the blossoming friendship between her and Adhira. I thought the family dynamic was written particularly well, the author really managed to bring the feelings of the traditional Bennet family to this modern day retelling- these relationships were another aspect that developed really naturally over the course of the story. I experienced such a rollercoaster of emotions reading this, with very emotional moments and massive plot twists, as well as a lot of scenes that made me laugh out loud- the writing style that I originally found cheesy definitely contributed to this and was another thing I grew to love! My favourite thing about this book was the romance which felt so realistic and I loved the love interest so much- my only complaint would be that there wasn't enough of this! (Although I definitely appreciate why this was, and the natural focus on self improvement it led to).
Despite my original hesitation surrounding this book, I can happily say I would thoroughly recommend this book, and I definitely plan to buy a copy upon its release.
