I'm just shocked. I'm honestly shocked. Horrified. Why did that ending HAVE to happen? I wanted a good ending. Theo and Piper deserve to be together and fall in love, THAT would've been my ideal ending. Not this. I did not want Evan to be so hung up over Piper that he re-kidnaps her... And then the book ends there. I saw the first twist with Evan coming far before it happened, (I mean, Natasha Preston does that to every love interest in her books that I've read so far), but I literally never saw that other twist coming.
So don't mind me, I'm just gonna be dreaming up a happy ending, where Evan forgets about Piper and she loves happily ever after.
WRITING STYLE
First person
Present tense
I loved the writing style. It was better than the dare, in some ways, and reads smoother and better. I could also pay attention to this book late at night, which is a bonus.
CHARACTERS
I don't like how Piper is so naive, trusting of everyone. Including Evan and Caleb. She did have a very realistic reaction to the kidnapping, and I liked how she stayed strong (ish) through it. And I think Theo and Piper would've been perfect together. In my world, Theo lives, and he ends up with Piper after almost dying saving her. Now that would've been the ideal ending. I don't like how she kind of loses her friendship with her best friend, and shuts everyone out except the guy who's going to betray/rekidnap her near the end, though.
PLOT:
Very suspensful, I never saw one of the twists coming. But I saw the other one like a big red flag. I dont get WHY the kidnappers kidnap teens, it never said. That seems like a huge plot hole to me. Is it for the satisfaction that it gives them?
The thrill?
Or what? I guess I'll never know...
CW: Content: Moderate violence. Mentions of torture, characters are tortured with loud noises, deadly heat, water, light. Several characters are killed, no details except that the gun went off and they died, characters are locked in a prison and the kidnappers make it look like they ran away, Piper is slapped on the cheek, mentions of "room zero" where people are killed, (Piper doesn't go in room zero) mentions of liking a guy, hand holding, blushes, Piper is betrayed twice by boys in one book.
I don't know of I'd recommend this book. But its probably bets for 14-15 and up, depending on the maturity of the reader. Of you're sensitive to the content above, I'd skip this. The ending ruined the book for me, tbh, and if this review wasn't already super long I'd probably rant about it for like 50k words. Now I need a light, fun read, maybe a rom-com or something to help me recover from that ending.
Thanks for reading my review!

This was a breath of fresh air!!!! I want to know what happens next. I devoured this book and loved the saw like feel to it without all the gore.
Good Lord, the writing is atrocious and I can’t subject myself to this complete and utter nonsense. The conversations are stilted and weird. They’re not even talking like normal teenagers.
fast-paced
This was a quick read with a good plot but the ending?!?!
I needed at least another 2 chapters.
