The weekend I treated myself to A Magical Inheritance was one of the happiest reading weekends I experienced last June. Strong female characters. A sprinkling of magic. Period costumes. All delightful. But what really kept me hooked were the deliciously dysfunctional family dynamics. I am really looking forward to the next entry in this series.

I quite enjoyed A Magical Inheritance. Elizabeth was a sympathetic protagonist and my heart hurt for her and her circumstances. The secondary characters were well realized, and I really appreciated Elizabeth's friendship Maria. I also liked Maria and her husband's battles/banter. My actual rating is between three and four stars, but I rounded up for some well executed confrontation scenes. While not entirely happy with the book's resolution, I do feel it was appropriate, and it will be interesting to see where the story goes.

Ugh. What a disappointment. The plot itself was actually interesting, I was excited for the premise of this book. But the main character is absolutely insufferable. I think she was meant to be good but comes across as asinine. Maybe future books in the series would see her grow more but I don't think I could stomach it.
She waffles from falling to pieces to excusing and supporting her own abuse at the hands of her family. The ending made no freaking sense.

Around the Year (ATY) 2020 Prompt #5: First book in a series new to you.

Loved this book! Great characters and a setting that felt real. Regency England with magic, with a group of female friends working together to bring the Occult studies back to women. The Royal Occult Society, which excluded women, reminded me of the all-male Royal Society of the time.

I enjoyed this, but I can't say I loved it.

I liked the resemblance to the world of Pride & Prejudice [my favourite book], but I never really connected with this Elizabeth. I wanted her to have more spunk and determination to fight against the stupid, stupid men in her life who tried to control her and take advantage of her. She had too much angst about doing what she needed to do to find some independence with her own intelligence and ability for my tastes.

That said I enjoyed many of the supporting characters and the world-building with the magic. So this was a good read. Not a great read, but I enjoyed it. I don't know that I would go looking for other books in this series.
