If Fowler wasn’t in this book, it would be unreadable.
I love that Luna is blind, it’s a wonderful twist but I still didn’t like her character

This book is a retelling of Rapunzel, but with a dark twist. Set in a dark world, where the sun has blocked out all the light makes it is A total eclipse. Luna, the rightful Queen of the kingdom, lived in the tower since her birth after an evil chancellor murdered the king and the queen and seized their throne.
“This tower isn’t my fate.”
Luna, even though she is blind, she’s completely capable of doing anything. I love it when the character's disability is not a prevention to get better. Luna is a strong woman with a good heart. But I don’t know why it feels like it lacks something.
The romance. I think it’s cute. But I’m not a fan of this instant love thing. However, because Fowler is the first man she encounters, I understand why Luna can’t stop thinking about Fowler. She has a right to be curious.
I want to give this book four stars, but my heart tells me that it misses something crucial that I don’t even know what it is. Maybe the story doesn’t engage me.
I’m not sure if I want to read the sequel, but the ending forces me! The cliffhanger! Lucky I read it on my e-reader, and I already have the 2nd book. If not, I will be angry.

If you're looking to read a book with a lot of action, this isn't the book for you.
I'm not saying there wasn't action, but there wasn't much.
I really liked the book. I was in the mood for a fantasy book but at the same time, there had to be romance too, and this book it was perfect for it.
Although, it wasn't the best love story that I've read so far. It was a little predictable and simple, but like I said before, I was in the mood for something like that.
Also, Luna and Fowler reminded me of Beth Greene and Daryl Dixon of The Walking Dead and they're my favorite characters of all (speaking of tv series). They weren't the same but they definitely had similarities.
The book has a cliffhanger at the end that I felt it was quite unnecessary and it didn't surprise me (well, one part yes, the other one not).
I liked the characters and Sophie Jordan made me care about them and enjoy read them. I wanna know more about them and about the world in the second book. I can't wait to read it.

I really adored and loved this book. I almost regret reading it so soon after it came out because now I have to wait a year for the sequel.
And though the next chunk of the review is praising Jordan's skills at creating a lovable romance, be warned this book is not all that light. It's pretty gross harsh, actually.
I didn't notice at first, but I realized that the author was Sophie Jordan, who had, in her Firelight series, wonderfully blended romance and fantasy. The way she wrote her romance in Firelight for some reason stuck with me - I'm not sure what it was, but I loved it. She didn't take an overly long time to develop it or make them official, taunt us with unnecessary romantic drama between the couple and others, make it happen too quick with little to know character and romantic development, etc.
Because of that, I knew I had nothing to worry about when looking forward to the romance aspect of Reign of Shadows.
Like in Firelight, the two romantic interests interacted somewhat early on, but let their relationship develop from there. We saw the characters change as well as change the way they saw each other.
Unlike Firelight, it took quite a bit longer for the characters to show mutual romantic interest. While they thought the other was attractive, there wasn't much more than that (especially on Fowler's end) for quite a while. Given Fowler's history and personality, it makes sense, and there's also the fact that they had many other things to worry about than if the other person is finds them attractive or not.
And because of that, their relationship develops differently than in other books I've read. They are forced to rely on each other and trust each other, and in protecting each other, they develop a sort of intimate closeness emotionally that borders platonic-friendship and romance. It was more of slow burn, but it burnt hot. I adored it. I love it so much and want more.
All that said about romance and stuff (because I am obsessed with romance, and I actually can't help myself, it's sometimes frustrating) this book is not puppies and rainbows. The love (not just romantic) is the lightest thing in the whole series.
It's actually quite dark (in a literal sense) and gross and gory. Some of the creatures and people described belong in zombie apocalypses and could be nightmare fuel. *shiver* Ugh.
If there was a movie made, even if they didn't do the other creatures as accurate as they could (should) they'd still might rate it R or NC-17, or at BEST, if they take out some of the death, PG-13.
This book can be harsh and gross and gory and even a bit heavy.
I think this is the darkest Sophie Jordan has gone before, judging from Firelight (which is more light) and the summaries of her other novels. She did great. I love it. I really do. I can just see the potential of her going darker and the sort of stories she can write with it and infuse it perfectly with her romance. It almost makes me drool.
She's also great at world-building and details. And the eclipse, I didn't realize, is literally an eclipse of darkness. I just thought, from the summary, it was just darkER in the day, not as bright, like a normal eclipse. No. It's like it's night almost all day long. Pure darkness. A real Reign of Shadows.
Speaking of details, she's great at hiding secrets, too. There is a very big piece of information that you don't she hides until she drops in on us a handful of chapters in. I didn't expect it at all. I even went back to skim what I had read before, but there were hardly any hints. The reader wouldn't have known unless it was just a random thought floating in their heard, not something based on hard evidence or something. I was very shocked. Great job, Jordan. That rarely happens for me in books.
All in all, I really loved it. It's great, I wish she had more books of hers that I could read before I finished them all, and I eagerly await more to the Reign of Shadows story and more works now that she's opened the floodgates of darker, grosser, and heavier material.

Reseña https://ratondebiblioteca15.wordpress.com/2017/05/15/resena-de-reino-de-sombras-sophie-jordan/
Love that the main character has a disability. Dont love the part where she has to feel the love interests face to know what he looks like
2.5-3 stars.
This is a retelling of Rapunzel, but honestly the similarities only go as far as her being a girl who has lived in a tower her whole life hidden away, is innocent and unknowing of the world, and meets a boy who takes her away from said tower and into the world.
This also reminds me of this other story where the main character is blind and there are creatures that attack everyone but that story is definitely way different besides that.
The romance is a big part of the story and is definitely Insta-love. It bothered me just a little bit. I actually liked both of their characters though. Besides for the fact that Luna is quite annoying with her self-sacrificing thoughts toward the end. I just didn't understand that after everything her guardians did to take care of her and protect her. She didn't even have any plans to try to take back her throne, she just wanted to sacrifice herself... Fowler I enjoyed quite a lot actually. The scene near the beginning in the bedroom soon after they meet cracked me up a lot.
The length of the book was also annoying. I felt like the plot was just starting to pick up when it abruptly ended. Nothing really happened for most of the book and then when it does it just ends. I feel like this book should have been longer.
Somehow even with all of this, I still want to find out what happens so I might read the sequel when it comes out in a year.

I really enjoyed this, but I felt like it was half a book. The ending was no ending at all. I would recommend it but maybe wait until the 2nd book comes out.
A solid three stars. The pacing was fast, and the story was good but not good enough to make me want to continue with the duology.
