So. I don't really have any feelings about this. It was just...okay. The plot was alright. The end was sort of redeeming. I just felt like the characters were so flat and unoriginal. Maybe the fact that I was listening to this on audiobook was a factor, but I just felt like the dialogue was always super cheesy. I don't know. Maybe after I think about this I will have different thoughts.
What was that ending? It wasn’t so much a cliffhanger as it was just the end of a chapter. Like there was supposed to be another chapter after it. Ugh
Also at first I loved the MC being blind but ummmmm she’s capable af. Too capable. It’s a bit much.
All in all it was okay and because of that ending I will read the next one because I feel like I didn’t finish reading the book.

Reign of Shadows had a lot interesting components in it to make it an astounding read and novel. Firstly I like the loosely based retelling factor and component. It's there throughout the book as you read, however it's not suffocating. Also I liked that we saw character development within the length of this book, without it feeling rushed or out of place. Overall the generally story was great.
One of my favorite things about Reign of Shadows was the character development. It was a continuing factor throughout the book and I loved it. The characters weren't prefect from the beginning, and even at the end they still weren't prefect, but they did go through inspiring changes. I think I liked seeing Fowler's changes the most. He was such a closed off character at the beginning who strictly believed that caring was for the weak, and those who cared basically got themselves killed in the process. He actually really made me mad because of those traits at the beginning. Like not mad as in I hated him, I just got frustrated because I actually really liked him as a character and I wanted him to grow. To sum it up, he really did grow. It was like watching a caterpillar turn into a butterfly.Beautiful and transfixing all at the same time. Also, the things he sacrificed for Luna also nearly killed me. I also loved Luna's development. I think one of my major concerns for her was being naive but her development as a character definitely proved me wrong. I also liked that she believed that caring didn't make you weak but stronger. I loved the idea that Luna and Fowler were sort polar opposites into mid way through the book when they started to kind of merge together and get closer.
I also loved the world built for Reign of Shadows. I liked the idea that for the bane of Luna's existence the world has been submersed in complete darkness except for an hour period of time where only a little light shows through. In the event of the eclipse it allowed for creature to form and come out of hiding to prey on the living. Also the description of the different locations that Luna and Fowler discover were magical. So descriptive and captivating, to the point that i did exprience shivers during different descriptions.

Two stars.
There were many things I liked about this book, such as the unique world. The world is set in a constantly dark world due to an eclipse that has lasted for 17 years. There are dark creatures that roam the land, and every day is a fight for survival. I liked the writing style of the author, mostly because of the use of description when writing about smells, feelings, warmth and cooking. Plus, this is a Rapunzel retelling, and who doesn't love a retelling?
However, there were many, many things I did not like about this book. The main glaring issue was the insta-love, vomit-worthy mushy-gushy dialogue, and the inaccuracy of characterization. The love interest, Fowler, is described as being a stubborn, selfish heartless survivor. However, after only knowing the main character for one day he is instantly in love with her and vows to always protect her. He suddenly has reasons to live and professes his undying love.
I wish the author had focused more on the world-building and character development. I would rather have seen more of this unique world and how the darkness impacted the humans and the lifestyle they had to adapt to rather than a boring, juvenile, 100 times already done romance.

Disney's Tangled is waaaaay better.
And is there even an actual plot to this story? The two sapheads plan on going to this place called Allu where it's supposedly a safe-haven (but you never know if cannibals live there since their whole world is really messed up as it is: darkness all day except for an hour of "light," people eating giant bats which leads to insanity, the current king is the father of our blind saphead's loverboy, and there are monsters called dwellers that eat people). No, they don't even go there, and near the end is when the girl thinks she should go the the evil king and turn herself in so he'd stop killing the rest of the female population.
Already know what's gonna happen in the sequel: girl will get her eyesight when the darkness is lifted, evil king is killed, and sapheads live sappily ever after.
Another retelling to throw into the fireplace. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.
Spoiler
A (blind) girl stuck in a tower falls for the first guy she comes across, but unlike Rapunzel, this girl can't stop thinking about him. She's BLIND for crying out loud, so how...why - ugh, I'm not even gonna question it. And her blindness is never fully stated. Is she totally blind, like all-I-see-is-black kinda blind, or blurriness, or -? Nope, nothing explains how she even knows exactly where everything is like she CAN see. Her character could've been so much more instead of a horrible I'm-so-in-lust-with-you saphead. The guy is just as worse. The fact that this book is written in first person POV with the two sapheads alternating, really dragged the story and made it even worse than it already was.And is there even an actual plot to this story? 1.5 stars, meh. Weak storytelling and worldbuilding, cringey instaromance, deus ex fowler constantly, and blindness written in a way that makes no sense. Only finished it bc it was so short tbh
