Started a little slow, but quickly picked up steam and built itself into an incredible run of stories. Lots of great little arcs adding up to an incredible final story that I really enjoyed.

Great big superhero stuff in the mythic Marvel 80's era, this book delivers a powerful punch as Earth's Mightiest Heroes struggling against not only a cavalcade of classic villains, but also the strife of an uncertain team trying to come together despite their disparate personalities. This is classic Avengers at its best, with some of my favourite Hercules moments in Marvel history. All of the arcs in this collection are solid, but the attack by the Masters of Evil really takes this one to the next level. I have to admit to having a personal bias for this incarnation of the team because this was the time I first became a monthly reader as a kid, but I really don’t think that impacted how much I enjoyed reading this one now, thirty some-odd years later. It's just that good of a run.

I got this because of the 'Masters of Evil take over Avengers Mansion' four issue arc that takes place at the end of this, but I got nearly 500 pages of epic other Avengers goodness for my money. If you take the standard conventions of 80s comics into account, these issues are some really good ones, culminating in the great story at the end. A lot of people bag on this incarnation of the Avengers: Cap, Wasp, Black Knight, Captain Marvel, Hercules, Namor, and some Thor, but I never really understood that - I like this team, and it works well with added players, like Alpha Flight, Ant-Man, Paladin, Black Widow or Dr. Druid. With the Baron Zemo, Moonstone, Goliath and crew set-up, this also lays the groundwork for what would be the Thunderbolts stuff later on. So, yeah - nostalgia points AND reading this as an adult points. Good stuff.
