I don't know what it is about this series. I can't stop reading it. I feel like I shouldn't like it, because in all honesty, book 1 and 2 could have been condensed into 1 book, but I don't even care...

As the second book in this series, it marched in a sedate progression. The anticipated moment of development isn’t borne until the final five percent of the book. Aaaagh! That was frustrating. The plot focuses on Brianna’s fears, her continued internal drama, and leaves out any real action. I hung onto the little moments, like the party scene with Karl. In spite of all that, the ending delivered enough satisfaction that I’m forecasting a much faster paced third book. I await its release to find out.

In the second book, Stephan has worked hard at getting Brianna to trust him and has started coaching her to talk about what happened in the past in hopes that it will be some sort of therapy for her. He longs for her complete trust in him and works hard to get it.

Stephan longs for Brianna’s love but is willing to wait until the end of times because he wants her to be ready on her own terms. I liked how their relationship slowly builds in this book, causing us to see emotions from Brianna besides fear.

I found myself more emotionally involved in Stephan and Brianna’s life in the second installment. Brianna is slowly (very slowly) hatching out of her shell and you find out more of all the horrible things that she has been through. As the reader, I realized that “fixing” Brianna isn’t going to happen overnight. It will be a procedure that will happen gradually and I liked that Hayes is writing it this way because it feels like real life. Anyone who goes through that much torture isn’t going to instantly fall in love and feel safe and secure with a man overnight.

Need was provided to me as an arc from Net Galley. Luckily, I was able to read it directly after Slave left off with a cliffhanger. I wish I can say the same for book 3. I can't wait!

In Need, Stephan realizes that he has fallen in love with Brianna, and she realizes she is not his slave and doesn't have to stay. But Brianna is so broken, she can't even leave the apartment by herself without having a panic attack. Stephan is wonderful and patient, and despite being a Dom, he pushes Brianna without ever pushing her beyond her limits.

Stephan works very hard at making Brianna more independent and comfortable around people, and gains her trust 100%. Brianna becomes highly dependent on Stephan and wants so much to please him, but doesn't think she can. Stephan takes so much time and is so patient with her that when they finally do make love it is sweet, loving, and they both clearly enjoy it.

Yes, Stephan is clearly a Dom. He punishes her for not communicating with him, not by beating her, but in more subtle ways. He is very much in charge without needing to prove it physically (yet). Clearly Brianna needs this kind of control, because she is not able to function on her own. Stephan gains more power over her by being her emotional crutch, and the only person who can bring her out of one of her flashback/panic attacks. It seems as if she is weak. But she isn't. Brianna is so strong. She is basically a child, but has been through so much. The fact that she wants so much to work at it and make Stephan proud proves how strong she is.

Likes:

-Stephan would do anything for Brianna and is available when she needs him no matter what.
-Brianna's growth and healing
-This book changed from first person POVs. It was always clear who was speaking, and often the same scene was played out by both, seeing how each character saw it.

Dislikes:

-The characters of Stephan and Cal both seem strangely old for their ages (Cal is what, 19, and running a company?)
-The book ended with a cliffhanger. We knew it would happen, and it could have still left us hanging without the actual cliffhanger.

Rating: 4.5 for story, 3.5 for Heat

Need was a beautiful continuation of the story that began in Slave. I enjoyed all of the characters, and I am hoping upon hope that Ian gets in some major trouble, and Stephan and Brianna are able to be a happy, stable couple. Though this supposedly began as Twilight fanfic, I see NO similarities as the books have continued. I can't wait until the next, and wish I knew when to expect it!

I am so Gloria in this gif, I read the entire book in a day. I gave myself permission to read like crazy and I couldn't stop myself, I stayed late up reading, read throughout all the day. (I even skipped my evening TikTok hour)

This was amazing, for a book series that I assumed would all be about sex it isn't. Which I LOVE. I thought it was fun because it has the BDSM themes, which the author portrays well, then I had the beauty of this protective guy over her.

It is an amazing story, and I can't wait to read the next book... but I am gonna make the next one last a little longer.

I hope
