I continue to enjoy this series, as much as an old person can. This one at least felt a little different in some ways from the first three, and I look forward to seeing how the series progresses from here.

This was probably my favorite of the series so far!! I am rereading my favorite elementary school series after having watched the TV show twice, and I really did enjoy this book the most (thus far).
Lemony Snicket has a dark element to his books that can be quite disturbing if you think enough about it, but he is never graphic, and keeps it light and playful enough to where his books are appropriate for children.
What I really enjoyed about this book was the symbolism and word choice that tied around to the book at the end. Looking at the TV show and the books, Lemony Snicket really is a genius. The immense foreshadowing and thought that goes into his books may be the works of a mastermind. So-called “randomness” in the books and TV show is never really random, everything has a purpose which is something I’m only realizing after rereading the books and rewatching the TV series.

3.5/5 honestly just not my favorite plot of the series. The whole lumber mill setting seems to go outside of Snicket's usual "kind of believable and then it becomes fantastical" settings from the three prior. Also just why even try to act like hypnosis is real? Also goes outside of the things he normally uses that are scientifically sound in some way. Although a hurricane on a lake doesn't fit that either...very entertaining, nonetheless!
I’m reading this series with my 6 year old. His favorite part of book four was learning about hypnosis.

I remember enjoying this book more when I first read it, however during my read through I just couldn’t connect with it.
Although the plot differed from the last two books, which was good as I feel that another rehash would have let Snicket down, I feel that there wasn’t that much substance.
Everything happened very quickly, and led to the feeling of drama that it was meant to inspire tipping over, on occasion, into just feeling rushed.
