This book had a very strong start with interesting characters and a unique premise. It lost a bit of its luster about 3/4 of the way through, when the plot seems secondary to (in my opinion) overbearing possessiveness. The very end portion of action, which should have been similar to a final boss battle in a video game, was the easiest of all the trials and was resolved within a page or so.
The ending didn’t quite sit right with me either, there’s protectiveness and there’s creepiness.
Moderate: Murder, Gore, Violence, Colonisation, Slavery, and Sexual content
Minor: War

The book does quick work at setting up its premise and world building, allowing the characters room to shine. And shine they do! All the characters have big personalities, regardless of how much or little they show up. Usha's addition was probably my favourite, as she was a much needed force of nature to balance out all of the men.
The characters all also felt very distinct from each other, which was impressive in a book so fast-paced.
The romance was very fast for my taste, but is something others might enjoy. I just found myself far more interested in the characters and their banter than the romance.
A really fun read, good if you want some light-hearted fantasy that still has stakes to it!

2.75
like with so many of the romantasy books, for me the story is lackluster without the addition of the spice. i really want to like those books, and i dont mind ridiculousness or sillyness (i quite enjoy it).
but i want more body in the rest of the story.
like the idea of the world is really intriguing, but the execution is underwhelming.
i will not pick up the sequel. also (and maybe i am too sensitive here) for me this bordered on reluctance additional to "light bdsm" (i appreciated the triggerwarning though). just because we read her inner monologue doesnt mean he knows its happening - so this definately gave me a bit of an ick.
there were also some other sensibilities where maybe an additional sensibility reader would've been benefitial.
also the possessiveness is way too creepy for me!
all of that to say - i am aware a lot of what i wrote are me problems so i still gave it 2.75*
