“I had only two things on my mind: cheese and how to get home.”
this was a fun book that doesn’t take itself too seriously. the names are camp af. we have:
- Brie, the cheese seller
- Cinnamon Hotpepper - our protagonist and narrator
- Cinnamon’s siblings, Cumin and Chili Hotpepper
the dialogue was a little cringe, but i giggled throughout the entire book. the sex scenes weren’t bad, but they weren’t super hot either? it’s like they had potential but just weren’t quite there.
overall, this was a fun, camp read that serves as a great palate cleanser between heavier, more intense reads. i may decide to read the other books in the series.
also, Cinnamon is so freaking relatable, not wanting to go on an adventure bc it’s safer being at home, craving cheese whenever she gets drunk, attempting to be responsible by not sleeping with the demon she rescued but ultimately giving in because he’s hot, sweet, protective, and actually listens to her? she’s my spirit animal
“My self-preserving habits made me a bit of an outlier with the other girls in town. "Whe wouldn't want to go off on a grand adventure with a bunch of bet heroes also chosen by the goddess?"
Me, bitches. No, thank you.
Biceps were nice, but so was not having my guts eaten by an orc.”

That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming
I don't think I've had this much fun reading a fantasy book in a minute. Lemming is SO funny! I adored Cinnamon as a main character and fell in love with her humor before I was even 5 pages into the first chapter. The narrator did such an amazing job and embodied everybody's personalities to a T. All of the side characters added so much to the story. I think Usha was a favorite addition of mine to Cin and Fallon's merry band of sudden adventurers. I would definitely read this again immediately.
Cinnamon's just trying to live her best quiet life when she accidentally drunkenly saves Fallon, a demon on a quest to destroy an evil witch to free his people. Cin is recruited on this adventure, during which many varieties of shenanigans ensue. We follow the story through Cin's 1st-person POV. The pacing was a little fast at times and the world-building suffers a bit from the trap of the over-explaining inner monologue. However, the writing also captures personalities perfectly and the story is a genuine delight to read. Such a good use of the “touch her and die” trope. Lemming doesn't make her fantasy too formal which a) greatly benefits portraying character building and development & b) makes for a fantastic entry into fantasy without worrying about how overwhelming a lot of it can be.
This book does contain explicit romance scenes. Read/listen at your own risk lol
More quotes so you can enjoy Lemming's work:
“I saw her first, you honey-eating bitch!”
“I mean, not what I would say to the man who just beat your friend with your other friend like he was a ragdoll. But live your best life, I guess.”
“He took what I said to heart. Maybe I wasn’t traveling with a straight villain. Perhaps he was just villain-adjacent. I could work with that.”
“‘I bet Troy and the Ogre King never had to deal with this,’ I muttered. ‘What’s that Cin?’ Usha asked. ‘Nothing. It doesn’t matter anymore, so fuck it. Piracy.’”
