A fun, quick read with a compelling (albeit a little instalove-y) relationship. Cinnamon was a delight and I loved seeing the story through her perspective.

This was a super fun read. As my second romance book and first ever smut, it was so enjoyable I finished it within a day. It's super cheesy but it had me laughing the entire time. A great experience!

Picked this one up as a sort of "palate cleanser", and it was so fun!

This is a funny, lighthearted enemies-to-lovers. A short read, it's a relaxing adventure. The language is relaxed and quirky (with some contemporaneous phrases), so you get a bit of a modern (?) take on fantasy language. This is likely not for everyone, but I quite enjoyed it. Extra points for having a plus sized heroine (and the way he just loves her body).

The story is pretty straightforward, there is a possibly-villain, a reluctant but plucky heroine, a quest, and some romance. Worth noting that the spice here is really good (at least 3.5/5), so recommend if you like slightly kinky scenes...
(some bondage, praise kink, "good girl")

Definitely going to read the rest of the series as well!

read this for a book club and honestly thought it was pretty funny and silly until i got to the end of the book and Fallon essentially non consensually putting her to sleep and trapping her on the island for three months was a non-negotiable for me.

I like that it was clearly set in Fantasy South Louisiana, as someone from South LA.

The Worldbuilding was fun for the most part.

After a few too many drinks, our protagonist, Cinnamon finds herself the savior of a handsome dragon demon. In this world demons (generally a broad term for monstrous beings like werewolves and orcs) are known by humans as wild, rampaging beasts. A goddess regularly chooses heroes to fight the demons back when they strike, but it quickly becomes apparent that neither the goddess nor the demons are what they seem.

This book turned out to be a mixed bag for me. Cinnamon was a fun protagonist to follow. She was sarcastic and funny. Brave yet vulnerable, she drives the plot right along as she collects a band of merry humans and demons to her cause.

However, I struggled with the tone of the story. Lemming writes the story with a modern flair, despite the medieval fantasy setting. I appreciate what she was trying to do, but it never worked for me. It gave Cinnamon some great one-liners and created some amusing scenarios, but overall it took me out of the story. It often felt like the writing was trying too hard to be cute.

It flip-flopped between funny and light to ultra-serious too quickly. It gave me a sense of emotional whiplash. Cinnamon's demon love interest, Fallon is quick to dispose of anyone who slights either of them, including the burning of an entire city of humans. From what we know a majority of those humans were either innocent or ignorant to the plight of the brainwashed demons. While Cinnamon often protests Fallon's actions, her moral compass never feels consistent. Sometimes she's adamant that there be no unnecessary killing and other times she lets Fallon do as he pleases without a word (see previously mentioned city burning). Toward the end of the book she even shoots an innocent human right in the gut without batting an eye.

Maybe the cute, modern flair to the story could have worked better if the story didn't try to tackle such serious subjects like slavery and mind control. It made the serious moments jarring and insincere while the humorous moments were inappropriate or flat.

I also have to comment on the audiobook as that's how I read the book. The narrator did an excellent job of capturing Cinnamon's voice but wasn't great at reading Fallon's dialogue. All the romantic or sexy moments felt forced or awkward. I think I would have enjoyed the smut a lot more if I had been reading the words myself.

Also, "my demon" was SO OVERUSED. I swear if I heard it one more time my eyes were going to roll out of my head.

All in all, the potential of this book is there! There is so much I should have liked! The found family aspects were fun, but I wanted to know the characters better. The romance had a dynamic I like, but never grabbed me.

I can see why people love this story, it just didn't work for me. If the elements sound like something you'd enjoy I say give it a chance. You might like it more than I did.

The first third of this book was 5 stars but the later half was only a 3 for me. I think this was because the book got to be less of a cozy fantasy subverting tropes as it went along.
Cinnamon seemed to go from "ah! Scary demon!" to "pound me into oblivion" pretty quickly. I also thought her attitude towards dismembering and murdering The Heros was callous and out of character.
I'll probably read the next book in this series, but it won't be at the top of my list.
