I've never laughed so hard reading such a steamy romance, I couldn't stop smiling throughout the whole story. As irreverent as it is sweet, who knew the adventure that would come from getting drunk and saving a demon? Cin as a character is laugh out loud relatable and funny, she truly wants nothing more then to just mind her business and not be caught up in any adventures or main character-ing. Of course that is not how the story goes!
Fallon is peak male romance lead, masculine and protective, and more then willing to rip a man's arm clean off just as easily as he is able to kiss Cin senseless. (And he does both of those tasks quite frequently!) It is difficult not to fall in love with Lemming's writing, the amount of fun she seemed to have had in these pages makes reading it such a treat and delight. There is quite a bit of slang and jargon that will surely be outdated in a few years time, but for now it hits in that sweet spot of sounding just like how any other unwilling heroine might.
There are several scenes that get quite spicy, and they are written very well. VERY. WELL. I am not saying I am willing to be whisked away on a quest and gain a demon mate in the process, but I'm not NOT saying that. (Please any technologically aware demons, hit me up if you're reading this.)
A highlight of reading is all of the food parts, Cin loves to eat and all the food descriptors and her passion for her next meal also made my stomach growl, and kept the story light. A memorable scene is when Cin found out she had declared herself the cheese queen. I had to pause and just laugh to myself because it felt so silly, yet so right for this story. "Because I fully remember you tasking several orcs to bring you cheese. Then you sat in the captain;'s chair and the words 'I am the cheese queen' definitely came out of your mouth."
I do wish there were parts that weren't so rushed, the beginning was nice, but it quickly ramped up to the point the ending felt quite a bit rushed. I did enjoy it, even if Cin fell in love over the span of such a short time period, I can't say I wouldn't do the same when faced with such a sexy dragon.
It is a testament to Lemming's writing that even with how quickly the plot flies by in this short read, it sticks in your mind and leaves you satiated. But that is to say the pacing is far different in the beginning then it is in the end. When I realized there was only a few chapters left I was wondering just how the tasks the hero's were trying to accomplish was going to get done, with all the travel that been mentioned. In a way a part of it did feel a tinge unsatisfying, but it was so much fun I didn't truly mind.
This is my first book of Kimberly Lemming's, I NEED to read the rest of the series now. If you're looking for a funny and steamy short read, this is perfect for you, highly recommend!

That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon was a D&D monsterf**ker fantasy that I didn’t always want to participate in.

The premise of this book was fun, but I didn’t click with the writing style. It felt very choppy and informal, and while I don’t have an issue with simple writing I do still want the sentences to flow. I also hope that the extra round of proofreading that this book got when it was picked up for traditional publishing helped with the typos, but the thing that disconnected me from the book the most was the Hamilton reference. After that it was very hard to get back into the book.

Usually with books like this I can give a slight pass for the plot not 100% lining up if the spice is good, but this was the same scene played out three different times. The book is so short that it was really noticeable, especially when the spicy scenes don’t start till there are only 72 pages left in the book.

This was a fun time, but not a great time. I wouldn’t say that I don’t recommend it, but I would only recommend to specific people. 2.75 stars.

I don’t usually like romance books, but if you’re a black fantasy reader i suggest you pick this book up. I literally couldn’t put it down. Cinnamon as a character is so relatable to me as a black reader and I felt so engaged while reading this book. It did move fast but that was expected given the plot & genre. A very fun read, hilarious & if you’re a TTRPG or D&D friend, you’ll find extra fun it.

I mean, you know what you're getting into when you look at that title and cover. I wanted a fun spicy fantasy and that's exactly what I got. I had a great time the entire time, and I'm happy to read more from this series. This is not high brow stuff, I found some of the writing to be clunky and a lot of cliches are used. Part of me itched to do some editing to smooth things out, but I tried to focus on just enjoying the ride. This will also be a bit of a time capsule due to the very contemporary slang used. If you are craving the feeling of reading smutty fanfic at 2am on tumblr, this will hit the spot.

i was sold by the gorgeous cover, funny title, and literally the first sentence

“I had only two things on my mind: cheese and how to get home.”

this was a fun book that doesn’t take itself too seriously. the names are camp af. we have:

Brie, the cheese seller
Cinnamon Hotpepper - our protagonist and narrator
Cinnamon’s siblings, Cumin and Chili Hotpepper

the dialogue was a little cringe, but i giggled throughout the entire book. the sex scenes weren’t bad, but they weren’t super hot either? it’s like they had potential but just weren’t quite there.

overall, this was a fun, camp read that serves as a great palate cleanser between heavier, more intense reads. i may decide to read the other books in the series.

also, Cinnamon is so freaking relatable, not wanting to go on an adventure bc it’s safer being at home, craving cheese whenever she gets drunk, attempting to be responsible by not sleeping with the demon she rescued but ultimately giving in because he’s hot, sweet, protective, and actually listens to her? she’s my spirit animal

A super fun read! It's very light hearted and once I got in the groove of reading it I ate it up so fast.

It gave the feeling of a fun DnD adventure all in a book.

I really wanted this to be a full 5* book, and it almost was, but the end just fell a little flat for me.

I was okay with the conflict being predictable and fairly easy to overcome, but things they had to do to overcome the big bad were a bit repetitive and maybe just a little TOO easy. But honestly these are minor complaints because I love all the characters, especially Cinnamon and Fallon.

I loved Felix a lot too, and even Cinnamon's whole family. Just super cute (and spicy) read.
