❝Don't you see how much this can't work?❞
❝No. I only see you. It would seem you have become a bit of an Achilles heel, Your Highness.❞

This took me 6 days to read because I genuinely didn’t want to keep reading. It wasn’t 100% awful, and I liked some parts, but it was super slow and the heroine was NOT for me. She was spoilt and bratty but acted like she never did anything wrong and everyone was out to get her. I think if we saw more of her family ‘hating’ her and not just her thinking they’re all dicks out for her blood that I would have felt more for her, but as it was she was a messy 30 year old who wasn’t ever mature or responsible for anything & she was just as bad as all of them to me. She’s disgusted by the guy she sleeps with getting with a sex worker, and instantly he’s disgusting, but she was more disgusted in that than the fact he had a wife. They get annoyed their staff is always cleaning up her messes, she claims she never asks the, to clean them up but also totally expects her messes to be cleaned up. She knows the press twist stories, immediately jumps on the hero for a story because it HAS to be true, but when the media runs a story on her blowing it out of proportion it’s awful and her life sucks.

It picked up in the end, but was also so damn dramatic. I’d probably like this more in a movie format than a book. It’s that cheesy kind of dramatic that would work better for a quick 2hr movie rather than the hours and hours it took me to read this. I also think this was... too long for what it was? And their relationship is so weird, especially how it starts but overall my biggest complaint is the heroine. She’s a 30 year old child with no world experience and is delusional. She said she once she jumped in a cab without any money and let her people deal with it after. She also ‘breaks out’ of her ‘prison’ and hides from her guard to runs through London for 40 minutes with a ‘disguise’ on (ugg books and a baseball cap) to be with her man.

Will I read the other book? Maybe. I want to see if there’s any character growth but I also hoped it would happen in this book and it didn’t so I’m weary. We’ll see.

JEM books are drop-everything-to-read books. BUT, I hate, cliffhangers with a passion. If I would have known this part of the series would end where it did, I would have waited to read it until the next one was ready. This story was so good and, thanks for tricking me, JEM, I thought it was resolving. Well, until it wasn't. It just left me hanging, desperately, over the cliff wanting a resolution. :) So, until the next book comes out, I'll be waiting here all anxiety ridden and stuff. Ugh!! Anyway, this is an amazing JEM story. Our princess and actor are an amazing couple and I can't wait to see how things turn out. Seriously, don't get me wrong... I loved it. It's truly a must read!!!

Words really can’t describe how much I LOVE this NOVEL!!!! There have only been one novel that I have stayed up all night and into the early morning to read and now The Controversial Princess is on that list. I’m in love with Josh and Adeline and they are OTP point blank period!!! The story and the twist and turns Jodi wrote in this NOVEL...the LOVE JOSH AND ADELINE HAVE FOR EACH OTHER....I wasn’t READY FOR GREATNESS!!! And now I have to wait for August to get the conclusion, it isn’t fair!! I highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves a great story, I’m shook at this ending and I’m ready for August and I need this to be a MOVIE ASAP!! I’m not giving anything away, just go in like I did, not knowing anything and coming out HYPED AF for the next book!!! Bravo Jodi!!!!

Ok.

Steamy guilty pleasure with just the right cliff hanger! Really enjoyed the banter between the two main characters, British Royalty and Hollywood Actor = entertaining. 💕

I am not super into the Dom Romance scene but I loved the story behind The Controversial Princess! Malpas does a great job keeping you on your toes with the star crossed lovers Adeline and Josh. And dang that cliffhanger! Part 2 of the duet is going down now!!!

Jodi Ellen Malpas and I have a difficult relationship. Some books of hers I love (the Protector), and others I despise (this man trilogy). I hoped this one would be one of those that I loved, but sadly that wasn't the case. I was "reading" this one for a month and a half, but I just couldn't bring myself to get through it. I put it down and never picked it back up again and now unfortunately I have to let it go into the pit of misery that is my DNF shelf. It is unfortunate because I anticipated loving this one so much that I actually requested an ARC for the second book but needless to say I won't be continuing on with it.

I just found this so, so boring. It felt so much like "I went horse riding, and then I met this man, and then we talked about horses, and then I rebelled against my father, and then my royalty was pulled into question because I had sex, I'm a princess that nobody likes..." and it just felt like a carousel of the same things over, and over again. Nothing was happening and nothing at all was compelling me to continue reading; I just didn't think that anything could make it better, or more interesting. I didn't forge a connection with the characters - not even close - and the plot seemed to be stagnant.

I also started to get a few red flags with the main male characters (and other male characters') behaviour. There was a lot of entitled boys in the few chapters that I read, and I ended up feeling massively uncomfortable overall which was one of the reasons that prevented me from reading it. The whole novel just felt so old fashioned - like they were a royal family in the 1800's, with the Dad getting to decide who she dates/what she does/where she goes, and it felt like the whole plot pivoted on arguments with her Dad and rebelling against him which is amusing the first time, but after it happens a few times it starts to become tedious.

- The writing was good
- The plot was going nowhere
- The characters are uninviting and unappealing (particularly the men)
- The power structure is completely mismatched to the setting
- It wasn't sexy, it was more... uncomfortable than anything
- But... at least the writing was good. Right?

I hate leaving negative reviews and this one pains me more than most because I assumed I was going to love this book. Romantic book with royalty as the centre of it?! Yes please! That is exactly my jam. But this one missed the mark massively for me. It really upset me how little I liked this actually. I honestly expected to love it because this is right up my street. However if the plot appeals to you, please do give it a go! I'm sure that it might just be the right fit for someone reading this review.
