Although in my heart of hearts, this is a 4 star read, I canter help but admit that the storytelling left to be described. The plotline could have been more interesting, the whole storyline of Halim trying to get into the tower made no sense (and his whole character being present for that matter).

With that said, I loved Toadling and Halim, especially together. I would have wished a longer novel so that we could have had a better plot.

I'm going to try something new for 2024; I'm finally making the switch from Goodreads to Storygraph. We'll see how it goes!

5 stars!

This is a beautiful dark fairy tale reimagining by T. Kingfisher and is far superior to "A Spindle Splintered" in my 2023 "list of favorite Sleeping Beauty Retellings". (There are only two books on the list, but it's a start).

Kingfisher deconstructs the fairy tale by asking why a fairy would lock a princess in a tower. What if there was actually a good reason? And thus, "Thornhedge" was born. Kingfisher's whimsical and darkly funny style propel the novella forward, making it both a breeze to read and making me long for more. The prose is gorgeous and I fell in love with the narrator immediately. Top tier for those who love reimaginings of classic works.
