Different from other Jodi Pocoult books I've read. More like Alice Hoffman. More magical.

DID NOT FINISH: 25%

It moved way too slowly for me. Also the vernacular and storyline was too antiquated to keep me interested.

I am a big Picoult fan but this wasn't one of my favorites. It was good, but I think she's done better. In her other work she has touched on some very controversial subjects and I always liked that -- makes me think about my own feelings on the topic. In this one, however, she doesn't seem to have really done that as much. She does touch on PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis) and vaguely hints towards "designer" babies; I think I would have enjoyed the book more if she delved deeper into that controversy.

The ghost/love story was sweet, but kind of fluff to me. I probably wouldn't have picked up a book with that storyline; Picoult's name on the cover is what convinced me to give it a shot. The murder mystery aspect is also something I'm not that accustomed to with her work. I don't normally read that genre, but I will admit to being curious as to how it all ends up and "who did it" as, right now, I'm not entirely sure. And, as always, though, Picoult has fleshed out her characters enough to make them real and engaging -- something I have always loved in her work.

All in all, it's been a good read, just not one of my top Picoult books.

Just became my favorite Jodi Picoult story! I love ghost stories! I love how she integrated the horrible history of eugenics, the dangers it lead to in the past and what it resulted in today. I love the romantic chemistry between the different worlds. Love! Love! Love!

For a Jodi Picoult book I was seriously disappointed. I finally finished this book after trying to start it about half a dozen times.

What a fun and eerie read. I fond the premise and characters in this book easy to buy into and enjoy. I loved the love story!

Great ghost story! Good character and location development. Interesting information on the Eugenics Society -- what would happen today if that research and those policies were put in place?

Absolutely loved it!

This was a very unique book of Picoult's. Although it does contain the expected difficult issue that generally plays a central role in a Picoult novel, that is not the central case here. Instead, the focus is more on a murder mystery with romance and a ghost story mixed in. Within this framework, numerous issues come to light: eugenics, genetic testing, the voices of those silenced, racism and poor treatment of the Abenaki tribe, even some sexism particularly within the historical parts of the novel. It is a refreshing change of pace from the others -- while I have yet to read a bad one, it was nice to finish one with a slightly more positive outlook.
