Solidly fun, but the pacing is a little bit off. Some parts of it (the character of Xalan, particularly) remind me very much of things in Katherine Addison's the Goblin Emperor, but overall this book is a lot less focused and doesn't give the psychology the same time to breathe. I'll be reading the sequels though, I had a good time.
