Some holes in the world building and the plot but wasn't really bothered by it. A nice read on a sunny afternoon

Darien is PRIME book boyfriend material omg! While not the most well written thing in the world, still considerably better than I had anticipated. Thoroughly enjoyed.

✨ AAAAHHHH I LOVE this book!!! The grumpy/sunshine dynamic is one of the sweetest I’ve ever seen!! And I adore the ‘touch her and you die’ vibes!!

✨ Loren Calla is a human trying to survive in Angelthene, which is basically being at the bottom of the food chain that favors supernatural creatures such as werewolves, witches and vampires. She always thought her life would be simple and predictable. Until she barely escapes an abduction attempt at the hands of Darkslayers, supernatural bounty hunters, who take her friend in her place. Now those Darkslayers are demanding ransom and Loren will do anything to get her friend back, even accepting the help of Darien Cassel, leader of the seven devils, the most feared dark slaying circle.

✨ Have I said how much I love this book? Well I love it! The urban fantasy world, the intrigue, the mystery, the relationships and THAT ENDING!! I need to read book 2

From the moment I picked up "City of Gods and Monsters", I couldn't let go, but, I couldn't read it fast either.

I wanted to know more, yes. I wanted to advance in the story too, but I felt the need to savor it and don't regret it even a bit.

After seeing some reviews, I knew I was embarking on a journey unlike any other. This masterpiece captivated my imagination and resonated with me on a deeply personal level, securing its place as one of my all-time favorites.

Angelthene was constructed perfectly. Kayla created a vivid and intricate world that is nothing short of remarkable. The city, its landscapes, and the social structure within the book are painted with such detail and depth that I found myself completely immersed, believing in the existence of every corner, every street, and every hidden path.
The lore is rich and well-thought-out, creating a universe that feels alive and teeming with the plot, conflict, and mystery.

In addition, the book mixes elements of romance, friendship, mythical creatures, and magic.

Speaking of romance, Darien and Loren's relationship was a highlight for me. Although sometimes the slow burn seemed too gradual, in the end, I found myself really enjoying their journey.
Their evolution from allies to friends and finally to lovers perfectly encapsulates one of my all-time favorite tropes and it reinforces my belief that one of the great pillars of love is friendship.

Everytime he called her 'baby' or 'sweetheart' my heart skipped a bit. But. 'OCEAN EYES'? OCEAN EYES? I died and come back three times because of it.

Several things struck me between Loren and Darien, but the main one and my favorite was Singer's attack and Darien's subsequent 'sacrifice'.
Let's just say I cried my eyes out.

Believe me: it's intense, and for me, as a pet mom, it was very, very powerful to read. So, congratulations Kayla. That scene is a punch in the gut and it's beautifully written.

There's so much more I could say, but I don't want to spoil the experience for anyone and, frankly, some things are better experienced than described and this book is one of those things.

It's very good and, for that reason, I recommend it to anyone who likes urban fantasy, mystery, slow-burn and found-family tropes.

Also, I'd like to make a disclaimer here:
I've seen some comments that consider this too similar to Crescent City by SJM.
I can understand the comparison, because they are both Urban Fantasies, but believe me, the stories are very different. So if you want to give it a chance, try to go into this book with an open mind.

Also, bear in mind that it's long, and the following books only get longer, so it's a commitment for a good few weeks, but in my opinion, it's worth every minute.

It was ok. Plot was all over the place. Too much was happening and the love interests were sometimes annoying. I’m going to read the second book as I’m still interested in the other characters and where the storyline will go.
