Kicked ass. Apocalypse, magic, dystopian train wreck meets realm of fantasy. Add in a solid dash of love, hope and rebirth. Total win. Looking forward to book 2 in my near future.

DNF.. I liked the concept of this book but I really did not enjoy the choppy writing style. I’ve read a lot of Nora Robert’s books and I’ve never experienced this style of writing in any of those. I really tried to push through, but after reading 60% I just couldn’t continue.

Dystopian novel, heavy on the fantasy and I enjoyed it. The action does go up and down...so it's not fast paced all the way. About halfway when the smoke begins to clear, the story does slow down some..as people begin to settle but it didn't make me want to stop reading. I was invested by this point.
Some things kept me from 5 starring this. There are a lot of characters so it's told from several point of views. I didn't get confused. I got where everyone was in their story but it had several main characters and that can leave a story with one too many holes to fill. I would have also liked just a bit more explanation between the magical races that appear. Such as the differences between them etc etc.
Other than that, I am definitely looking forward to getting my hand on the next book in this trilogy.

I’m surprised with how much I enjoyed Year One!
I’ve read books by Nora Roberts before but it’s always been in the romance genre. Roberts decided to try something different by tackling the dystopia genre and I thought she did a good job.

I thought in the beginning of the book that it had similar themes to The Stand by Stephen King but then Roberts added the magical element to it, and I can feel it stands on it's own.

Year One is the first book in the Chronicles of The One trilogy and Roberts went dark in this book and will likely keep that going with the rest of the books.
I personally loved it! I can see that if you like romance books by her that this might knock you on your ass. Don't go into this book or trilogy expecting that.

Year One starts off with a sickness spreading on New Year’s Day. The sickness, which is called the Doom, is incurable and over half of the population of the world dies from it. Governments and health organizations have no idea how it’s spread, how to cure it and why it keeps mutating. The lucky few that are immune to the Doom have to survive in a post apocalyptic world while the government tries to round them up to study and test them.

I loved the beginning with watching the societies and governments fail. Reading how the chaos and fear spread in this book was really well done in my opinion. I love me some post apocalyptic plots!

While governments and societies are collapsing, the lucky few are growing in magical abilities along with changing into magical creatures such as fairies or elves. I know, it sounds unbelievable but I think Roberts does a good job with it and I enjoyed all the fantasy elements to the plot.

But while some use the magic in responsible and positive ways, there are others that are going dark and using death along with torture to make their power stronger.

So it's dystopia + urban fantasty + a little bit of romance = this mesh mash of a Nora Roberts goodness!

There’s a lot to like with this first book in the series and I’m excited to see where the rest of the series goes. I think it’s a great start to the trilogy and looking forward to the life and foretelling of Fallon Swift.

At first I wasn’t so sure about reading a book about a pandemic while in one but glad I did. It was nice that there were plenty of happy moments which made the tough parts more bearable. My biggest issue was that it was somewhat frequently unclear who was speaking.

There were some things in this I really enjoyed. I liked the idea of the Doom, and the dystopian magic pandemic that resulted from everything. I enjoyed the different characters for the most part and the settlement they started. But I wanted to see more development of their interactions. I felt like their interactions with each other didn't develop as deeply as I wanted them too. There were a few to many characters and too much jumping around to really let you get too connected to any of them. Eddie might be my favorite so far though.

I am curious to see where the series develops over time. While it's not my favorite Nora Roberts series, but it is nice to read something different from her.

Nora Roberts is my favorite escapism.
