Loved every bit of this book. Kinda hits home reading this since COVID began, even though this wasn't even in the author's line of sight while writing this book. Makes you relate to the characters a lot more since a lot of us have dealt with loss.
A few bits and pieces were interesting but it was mostly pretty dumb.
I want half stars so much! 3.5 *
It was enjoyable, it kept me reading and interested.
But... it's The Stand.
Big plague, magic, good and evil fighting over the new world... there was even a tunnel escape.
I was fully expecting for the explanation about breaking windows.
Enjoyable book, but M-O-O-N spells Year One.
But yeah, I'll read the sequel!

Roberts has done it again!
I'm a fairly slow reader, but I finished this book in two days because Roberts is such a good storyteller that you can't put her books down! I'm always sad when I finish one of Roberts' series books because I know that I will have a wait some time for the next one. (The next book in the Chronicles of the One isn't out until November 2018.)
I especially like Roberts' books that have mystical or supernatural threads, which this one and the following ones in the series will have.

4-4'5

Exactly as advertised: end of the world as written by NR.
I wanted to like this book. There were components that I did like, but the book as a whole was somewhat of a disappointment.
Roberts started strong with a classic dystopian-apocalyptic-style worldwide plague, but what could have been a strong storyline got all kinds of sidetracked when she started in on the supernatural. I could have handled it if she had limited herself to just one category of supernatural, but she somehow incorporated everything from witches and shapeshifters to elves and faeries. Somewhere in the midst of dark magic, light magic, ‘a rip in the fabric,’ The Doom (her version of the plague that decimated humanity), and a fetus with otherworldly powers… she lost me a bit.
I did like some of her characters– Fred the female faerie was particularly delightful– but it just wasn’t enough to rescue me from my overarching confusion and distraction. I’ll likely give this series one more go and read the second book (out in December 2018) just because I do like said characters, but my hopes aren’t particularly high.
Fingers crossed Roberts can sort things out in Book II.

I was a little surprised to see this book on so many to read lists, since I assumed that Nora Roberts was exclusive to romance. That being said, I don’t think I’ve ever read a single Nora Roberts book. But I have a penchant for post-apocalyptic novels and waited patiently for this to become available on the library website (and there was quite the wait--good thing there were lots of copies).
The set up and the execution of the world succumbing to the unknown sickness--solid. However, with the introduction of the magic (Uncanny) elements, it felt a little bit shaky...like there were two different books she was attempted to write--both a fantasy and a post apocalyptic, and they didn’t fuse very well together. It seemed more like a fight to see which element was going to win for attention.
Another thing that bothered me was the clunky writing, especially with dialogue. I could have overlooked it but they totally lost me with their baby talk since I just went through it all. (Why would the mom have “plenty of milk” when she just had her babies??? Maybe I’m being overly sensitive to this.) Perhaps I’d be willing to overlook the flaws but I’ve read other, better post apocalyptic works and this wasn’t quite there for me.
I didn’t hate it. But it wasn’t for me. I thought about how great others have been for me so I’m settling on a 2.5 stars. Good effort though.
