Year One is a very dialogue-driven meld of dystopia and fantasy. There is a big cast of characters, which are largely undeveloped at this stage. The Stand is a fairly apt comparison as far as the plot goes; there's a clear good vs evil play off building. The purely hetero and white-washed representation was a bit disappointing, but this could change as the story continues. I am going to stick with the series, as I think there's potential for this to draw me further in.

3 Stars. Overall, I enjoyed the progression of the story from Doom onset to building up of communities once again. However, the book is written in a third person which jumps between the internal thoughts of each character practically every sentence. This combined with unexplained dialogue and unclear changes in scenery makes the story difficult to fall into and enjoy. The beginning of the book sets a horror tone which drastically changes to urban fantasy for the remainder of the book. Although this change was quite sudden, personally I enjoyed both aspects.

Roberts shares with us a fantastic storyline. Her voice in "Year One," is a practical one with strong superficial physical imagery focused on the mundane. However, currently, I am looking for things that are deeper below the surface or grander. Returned unread after 50 pages.

I really wanted to like this book but it just wasn’t for me
Such an amazing book! The author is quite the story teller. This is my first book by Nora and I loved it! This story took my heart and crushed it but slowly healed it in the end! I hope this becomes a movie, I’d love to see this beautiful story come to life! So excited to start the next book!
