This book was so interesting, I wish I had more people to talk about it with.
I thought the twist was hilarious how the main character was so insecure and unhappy in her marriage that she was overjoyed and relived to find out that her husband had MURDERED his first wife šŸ¤£.
The pacing felt different than modern thrillers but I was definitely intrigued and it kept me hooked.
I was thinking there was something implied with the Switzerland postcard and the magistrateā€™s reference like someone had told the doctor to fabricate that story but it seems that was the actual truth? A little twist for the end.

4.5 āļø loved!! a new all time favorite classic. du maurierā€™s writing is so stunning and lyrical, the descriptions of manderley were so vivid and immersive, the tension kept growing until the very last page, the character work was extremely skillful and the plot twists were executed so immaculately. the haunting, chilling atmosphere kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

(first third is mostly no plot just vibes + overall i enjoyed the book tremendously Despite the very uncomfortable age gap relationship. it got less unsettling to read later though)

"The road to Manderley lay ahead.
There was no moon.
The sky above our heads was inky black.
But the sky on the horizon was not dark at all.
It was shot with crimson, like a splash of blood.
And the ashes blew towards us with the salt wind from the sea."
