I loved the story and the characters and the amount of details Hawthorne put in. I underlined quite a few great quotes and I couldn’t put it down but I didn’t want to fly through it without actually comprehending the themes. Some of the writing though, good grief Hawthorne get to the point!! Paragraphs and paragraphs at times about literally nothing. Still worth a read though if you can skim over a few spots :)

So I listened to this as an audiobook which I think made a massive difference - the first chapter would have defo put me off if i had been reading it physically. I was actually surprised by how much i loved this book!! Yes the writing style is wanky with bad punctuation/syntax etc but so is a lot of contemporary lit too so dont give me that excuse

“Be true! Be true! Be true! Show freely to the world, if not your worst, yet some trait whereby the worst may be inferred!”
nate tried so hard to be deep
the prose is so dry and preachy
why are we being talked to as the reader?
hester is continuously apologizing for man’s actions. like fully why did she apologize to the pastor for putting him in this situation??? it takes two to tango
these so many unintentional funny moments that are supposed to be revelations
pearl is a normal child but she’s the devil until suddenly she’s not?
the pastor literally got out of being a father (again) by pulling the ultimate goodbye
