Need to watch Easy A with ol’ Nathaniel

Read for a book club. Holds up.

I had to read this in school, but I really enjoyed it.  It's essential reading.

Painful read lol I just don’t care for it but I did have opinions.

First of all she thought her husband was dead. In my opinion she is a single woman. Widows aren’t allowed to have sex?!? Secondly Reverend Dimmesdale is a SINGLE MAN. So the sin here is… a single woman and a single man had sex? Wasn’t the institution of marriage created like 5 minutes ago? What do we think the cave people were doing? Why are we so upset? And then her husband shows up… and he’s mad that she didn’t stay faithful when HE was the one who betrayed her in the first place by DITCHING HER and leaving her to fend for herself in a new country where she knew absolutely no one? And he tries to guilt her by boo-hooing about being an old ugly man. It sounds like that wasn’t the problem. It sounds like the problem was that you said you would follow her to America and then you literally didn’t so she very fairly assumed you died.

Hester has an amazing life tbh. Financially independent, has her own house, has a daughter to hang out with, no men bothering her, people leave her alone because they don’t like her. LOL

Chillingworth is so annoying and pathetic. Imagine being so bitter that you make it your mission to torment some guy you don’t know that slept with your wife who he assumed was single. Just go back to London and marry someone else. He is so obsessed with Hester. She is clearly over him and doesn’t want him and she wants the hot young minister and he is so bitter and angry about it.

Dimmesdale is also supes annoying. Like oh my god just reveal yourself. The guilt is literally eating him alive. Why would he not just go to Hester after she got out of prison and be like… wanna sneak back to London together?!?? Story over the end. No one in London would know the baby was out of wedlock. Also Hester staying there instead of leaving is so ridiculous to me.

Hawthorne’s writing in this book is TIRESOME and REDUNDANT. I love his short story Young Goodman Brown but this book is just sooooooo tedious. My constant complaint with male writers is that they think every detail they can think up is relevant and NEEDS to be in the story (Stephen King and Tolkien I’m looking at you). Male directors do this too. I’M OVER IT! Bye.
