Yet another 'classic' novel that irritated me. The story itself, of Hester's inner strength, is fine, but Mr Hawthorne chose to pad it out with a lot of philosophical blather, a prissy manner, and a tedious habit of describing every single little thing, from a leaf to a shoe to a look in the eye, in the most drawn-out fashion possible until the original message is almost buried beneath a tombstone of sentences.
I read this story in high school. I liked the story that this presented.
Listened to this on tape and drifted during the long winded parts, particularly the long intro. Not sure why this is required reading in high school, given other better choices? A good story but hard to get through.
