I read this book several times in school and came across it on tape again as an adult and totally loved it. My first audio book was the classic "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawtowrne. I checked out the book to keep me entertained on a long road trip and became so engrossed in the story that the exits to my destination went unnoticed until I hit rush hour traffic in the next town a full 40 miles away. That was 25 years ago and I am still a devoted fan of audio books. I also continue to rotate American and British Classics into my audio book selection. I have to say that stories that I thought were only OK when they were required reading in school have become cherished books as an adult. If your interested in updating your reading list to include some classics the following website have some good suggestions: http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top100.shtml  and http://entertainment.time.com/2005/10/16/all-time-100-novels/#all

I just could not get into the book

*2.5 stars

i read this my sophomore year and i just remember liking the story but not really understanding the writing and having to read spark notes after every chapter so i could actually understand what was going on.

This book is short and it's still way too long. Hawthorne needed someone to teach him to get out of his own way and stop describing furniture so much. I liked parts of it, like the messages of anti-slut-shaming and forgiveness. However, the symbolism and character names have some of the most obvious double meanings to them, which made me roll my eyes several times.

Probably was a revelation when came out, but currently I found it slow and boring.
Characters are described too superficially to find them interesting, and the plot is predictable and not detailed enough at the same time.
Nice to read for a research goals though.
