I can see why it would’ve been a big deal at the time, and in general academically. I can’t say I found the writing very engaging, I’m not really sure if the ideas were just not that complicated or if I don’t like how Hawthorne writes.

My favorite part of the book is the introduction where he underhanded roasts all his co-workers at the customs house. 

Like "if you first met him, you would think he was an idiot, but actually, he is not."
