Lovingly told, "Invictus," formally "Playing the Enemy," is the true story of how rugby and Nelson Mandela brought the factious sides of South Africa together. Carlin writes well, and with a quick pace, keeping this reader entertained and uplifted.

This was a brief history of race relations in South Africa, a biography of Nelson Mandela, and a recounting of the 1995 Rugby World Cup all in one.

This book let us see a little bit of what went on behind the scenes in the creation of the myths, both of Mandela and the 1995 RWC. By the time that Kobus Wiese says to Balie Swart, in the scrum in the semifinal against France, "You can go forward, you can go up, you can go down or you can go under. But you're not going back!" Carlin has made sure that we understand exactly what is at stake and what those words mean in a greater context.

I wish that I could have heard Swart, Wiese, and Hannes Strydom sing Nkosi sikelele. Anne Munnik, who taught the team to sing, described their rendition of the anthem to Carlin thus: "And then they began, like three giant choirboys, softly at first, rising, rising to the high notes..."

Awesome example of the power of forgiveness and the use of sports to unite a country. Can't wait for the movie.

Loved this brief, hopeful view of post apartied South Africa. This country, like all countries is far from perfect, but this brief story is part of the progress they've made.

I know it is a cliche, but this book blows the movie away. I liked the movie, but there was so much more going on in S. Africa than what the movie could possibly cover.

This story really shows how amazing events can turn on the participation of a few.

I skipped the intro and read it last. I'm glad I did.

Tēma svarīga. Atgādināja mūsu vienotību pēc hokeja bronzas. Mandela to izmantoja saliedēšanās un izlīguma veidošanai nācijā. Ja tic rakstītajam, regbijs izglāba Dienvidāfriku.
