I checked this book out at my local library to a bit of basic research on faeries for a story I wanted to write. This is a great overall guide to the world of the faeries, giving a general history over them as well as sharing intriguing tales about the different faeries and those who encounter them.

My favorite faerie to learn about was the Gwragged Awoon, a water faerie that dwells on the surface of most lakes or ponds. Unlike sirens or other dangerous water creatures, the Gwragged Awoon are kind to the humans, and only do harm when harm is done unto them. It was really fun learning about them as well as other interesting creatures, like the selkie or the spriggan.

The best part about this book are the illustrations that come with them, which transport you to the faerie world due to how stylized they are. The text of the book can also be shown in a faded handwriting that suggests this was an actual research journal someone took notes on over the years. It feels archaic and magical because of it.

So if you are a fan of the fantasy genre and want to learn more about its origins, then this book is a must for your book shelves. It is a five star book for me because of how informative and fun it is. Even though I checked the book out at the library, I'm tempted to get a copy for myself so I can always look at those gorgeous illustrations.
