This is Quentin Tarantino doing Elmore Leonard. The scenes are snappy and delightful and the prose is especially frank and lashy. Tarantino's use of profanity is remarkably creative especially at the end of paragraphs from the perspectives of criminals.
There being no plot wasn't a problem until the end when it turns out there really was no plot. I had the suspicion that these eclectic personalities would culminate in some barroom fight and they'd all die (because it's Tarantino) but I never expected a heartfelt ending where guys just say "well ain't that the life".
Tarantino captures a time in cinema between family-values laden westerns and R-rated action and drama movies. So, basically the actors and stunt men who are these dastardly anti-heroes are woven through Charles Manson and Roman Polanski with bits on Bruce Lee and Sharon Tate. The gears keep shifting keeping the pace quick, though sometimes the action is in flashback, and sometimes the morals are loose and the action is lurid.

Zelden heb ik een film geweten die zoveel tweedracht zaaide als Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Ik ben de film indertijd met 2 andere mensen gaan zien en daarvan vond één iemand het een middelmatige Tarantino en de andere vond het de slechtste Tarantino uit heel zijn oeuvre. Ik zat dan weer meer aan de positieve kant en vond het één van zijn beste films sinds hij Inglourious Basterds had geregisseerd. Van deze drie mensen was ik dan eigenlijk ook de enige die enigszins interesse had in de boek die Tarantino in 2021 uitbracht. Geen idee wat te verwachten maar met veel zin aan begonnen.
Het interessante aan heel deze uitgave is dat het niet gewoon een één op één vertaling van de film is. Er zijn elementen die natuurlijk terugkomen (zo wordt het bezoekje van Cliff Booth aan de westernranch waar de Manson Family zich verschuilt terug opnieuw verteld) maar het merendeel is uitbreiding op de film. Zo krijg je deze keer veel meer achtergrond bij Cliff Booth – er wordt onder andere een antwoord gegeven op de vraag of Cliff nu wel of niet zijn vrouw heeft vermoord – maar ligt de climax ook helemaal niet bij de (ondertussen toch al legendarisch geworden) eindscène uit de film waarin Rick Dalton met een vlammenwerper een stel hippies te lijf gaat. Het probleem alleen is echter dat dit vooral aanvoelt als een boek dat vooral is ontstaan uit een aantal zaken die Tarantino voor zijn filmscript heeft geschrapt. Zaken die ongetwijfeld niet misstaan hadden in de film maar die de vaart er inderdaad wel eens wat uit hadden kunnen halen. Ik hoop in ieder geval dat Tarantino ooit nog eens het Lancer universum gaat betreden, want wat hij hier neerpent is werkelijk fascinerend te noemen. Beetje jammer dat het boek verder niet echt een einde lijkt te hebben maar zelfs nu zit je al aan 400 pagina’s. Idealiter werd dit gewoon een combinatie van het boek + de gebeurtenissen uit de film maar dat zal misschien teveel zijn geweest.
Verder is dit natuurlijk geweldig om te lezen als je fan bent van Tarantino’s film. Op papier knettert het even hard als op beeld en je ziet in alle gedragingen en bewoordingen opnieuw onder andere Leonardo Dicaprio en Brad Pitt voor de geest. Een absolute meerwaarde ook om dit in het Engels te lezen, in een andere taal gaat er toch veel van de magie verloren gaan. Fijn om te lezen en leest lekker vlot maar ik had toch liever de combinatie van de film en dit boek gezien.

The most fun I’ve had with a book in a long time. A fascinating, singular multimedia experience. It’s quite possible that I liked the book more than the movie, yet the major deviations/expansions from/of the movie are what make the book great. The book is somehow both sweeter *and* meaner, with its own set of plot priorities and sense of amorality. I loved every second of reading this, couldn’t wait to return every time I had to put it down.
I wish I could unsee the movie and unread the book, then do it all again but read the book first just to see how it the experiences would differ.

Prefiero la película, por mucho. Este libro parece una secuencia de anécdotas sin mucha cohesion y ademas cambia muchas cosas del guión que dirigió.
Este libro basicamente es una colección de detalles que quizas le sirvieron a Tarantino como una especie de historia de trasfondo para los personajes que concibió, pero definitivamente el proyecto debería de haberse quedado en sus archivos.

This might not be the best written novel I've read this year but it's the most entertaining.

Holy Christ! I was screwing around looking for more YouTube interviews with Quentin Tarantino about this novel & damned if I didn’t come across a 10-hour audiobook- a reading by one of my absolute favorite actresses (ahem … actors) Jennifer Jason Leigh!
I swear before God: she is a brilliant reader. Plus, I learned after many, many years how to pronounce Cahiers du Cinema .
I’m actually re-reading this novel along with Jennifer Jason Leigh… which is no minor kick.
