Very spooky read, although it was a bit on the long side- a lot of scene setting and exposition but otherwise very good

1.5 star to Last Days by Adam Nevill, another book I wanted to love, but oof did I ever not.

Sigh, this book should have been a 5 star read for me, it had so many horror tropes I love: documentary filmmaker exploring something spooky, a dangerous cult, supernatural entities, lifelike nightmares etc, but man, I struggled to get through this. I found it way too long and it felt very repetitive; Kyle discovers something, Max lies, bad dreams, paranoia, rinse repeat for 500+ pages.

The pacing also threw me off. It felt like the slowest of slow burns, until the last..40? 50? pages, and then it veered into an action packed ending that just didn’t work for me. It was reminiscent of some of Stephen Kings books where the ending just kind of…comes along like it’s out of a different book.

I know this one is loved by a lot of people, and while the premise really intrigued me, the execution fell flat. However, It did make for a fun buddy read with Kalie - lots to discuss!

I would not recommend this book overall-but it could just be me. I really enjoyed The Vessel by Nevill, so I will check out more of his works, but maybe just the shorter novels.
