A spooky novel about a 1970s cult, the fanatical leader, a documentary duo investigating years later, and their curious benefactor. The plot is really interesting and while you can definitely tell this novel is long (it packs a fair amount in story-wise) it doesn't feel like a chore to read through it. The story keeps interesting and new tidbits about the cult and surrounding mystery are revealed all throughout which kept me on my toes.
There are only two things that stick out to me that weren't as enjoyable. I didn't really like Kyle (and to a lesser extent Dan) and found him to be a bit brash and off-putting. It wasn't enough that I dislike the overall novel, just something I occasionally noted while reading. I also found the pacing to be a bit off, particularly in two sections where things wax philosophical. The novel really picks up speed as the end approaches, so to have parts (two that distinctly stood out to me) where it's suddenly slowed to talk about the greed and narcissism that can be inherent in humanity didn't quite fit in there for me.
I took some time with this novel, though that was more me than the writing/story quality. Otherwise a great spooky novel that really gave me the creeps at some parts! The 'monsters' were scary and I enjoyed the various settings the book went to, very atmospheric for anyone looking for that kind of thing.

I LOVED this book! I will definitely be reading more by Nevill! The descriptions were amazing, and sometimes I really regretted reading chapters before bed because they sent shivers down my spine!

The most frustratingly verbose book I’ve ever read, but I do have to respect the author’s transparent obsession with petite men
