I liked this. Yes, the end made me cry but the timing was impeccable as I'm having my own health problems and I liked learning about how his mom handled her own illness. It made me think, too, about how I'd like to handle the end of my life, and also was a great book on reading and how amazing it is. Recommend.
A book for book lovers, and a book that will broaden your Horizons and introduce you to an absolutely remarkable woman. I've heard of some new books that I want to read and I've remembered some wonderful books that I've already read. I've stretched my adoration for women around the world and I've been inspired. Recommend!

I thought this was a great read and I liked how the connections between books in the book club connected to the story as well as to topics that I could relate to. You know from the outset what the end of the book will be, but the story in between was touching and thoughtful.
This book hit close to home with me. Will wrote this book about his mother's battle with cancer and how they spent the last of her time. I think we could all stand to be a little bit more like Mary Ann. This book reinforced an idea many people seem to forget. While it is oftentimes hard to find the words to say when someone close to you is going through something so horrible it is always "better to say anything rather than pretend that nothing was wrong."
I ended up highlighting a lot of passages through this book - another personal favorite, which I think could provide people a lot of comfort: "you can be gone but ever present in the lives of people who loved you, in the same way that your favorite books stay with you for your entire life, no matter how long it's been since you turned the last page."
Mary Ann was a woman full of wisdom and somebody I would have loved to have a conversation with. It really amazes me how people can still be so great when dealt such a horrible hand. She also said "you can't control the beatings, but maybe you can have some control over your happiness."
And lastly, "sometimes you just can't know what's going to happen, even when you know everything there is to know. So you prepare for the worst but hope for the best."

I wanted to like this book--it's such a great idea!--but couldn't stand the narrative voice. I may come back to this one, I may not. Life is short and I've got a huge list of books to read.
It's hard to give this a bad review, because of the subject matter, but I am so glad to be done with it. Part of it is just that I really do not like memoirs, and the other part, well, let me just say I would not want to be in a book club with this woman. Her son seems to worship her, and of course I feel for his grief, but she comes across so humorless, preachy, and controlling, I just did not want to read another word about her by the end of the book.
